I need to get one of these with protools for the audio production program at my college. I'm going to use both pc and mac (using ext. drive /w 2 partitions.) I am just thinking, what other hardware can I get (for both pc and mac) besides the standard recommendation? E-mu 1616M maybe? How about software for editing on pc to go with it (instead of protools?)

A lot of the cheaper M-Audio stuff works with Pro-Tools, as they are now owned by Avid.

For college you are probably better off learning Protools as it's industry standard but there are loads of other programmes which do some or all of the same things. Soundtrack Pro and Peak on the Mac, Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit) then there are the packages which also build in sequencing and software synthesis like Logic and Cubase and a whole raft of things like virtual samplers produced by people like Propellerheads which will work alongside.

If you plan to run ProTools, you'll have to buy something from either Digidesign or M-Audio (from the M-Powered line); it won't work otherwise. I've heard that the new Mbox 2 is a bit of a rip-off and that it removed a few features from the first Mbox, but I can't recall which ones.

The E-MU 1616M requires an internal DSP card to be installed in your machine, so it would not work with both Mac and PC; it's not an external-only audio interface.

You might consider looking at some models from Presonus (Firebox, Firepod) or MOTU (828mkii). There are more expensive alternatives from RME and other high-end studio-centric companies.

Edit: Or the E-MU 0404 USB for ~$200.

I really enjoy my Presonus Firepod. It will work with both mac and PC and very well. For what it has to offer it is really cheap, to me. Cubase is also a good ALT to protools. it is basically the step down.
