I am using my xDuoo 05 as dac/amp and in need of something similar to a Dap (I think)

I won't need all the bells and whistles of a fancy dap if I'm using my xDuoo so all I need is a music storage that play most lossless and has a lcd screen.

Is there a name for this type of source or does it still come under as a dap?

At the moment I am using my s9 plus with my xDuoo but I am having annoying issues with the usb cable slightly being knocked on the s9 port and losing connection to my amp, losing sound. Maybe a source with optical put would be better then a dodgy connection to USB?

Thanks in kind

Ummm...DAP means Digital Audio Player, meaning it can play digital audio and likely has a screen - LCD or not - as part of the user interface hardware.

If you mean something like a pure transport ie no amplifier nor even a DAC circuit and only has digital output, well, that's the problem. Because removing those "bells and whistles" just leaves you spending on something with other kinds of bells and whistles. Like the Fiio X7, which has an optional no amp module, but costs more even if you buy it without the amp module since the main point wasn't "built in amp or no built in amp" but "you have three kinds of built in amps to choose from, or hey, choose no amp if you want."

It's kind of like if you wanted a pure transport for your car since you want to use an outboard DSP (something needed when you sit off-center with the tweeters not sitting smack next to the midwoofer and the subwoofer is behind you) and you end up with like that one Pioneer or ///////ALPINE CD transport with a bundled, separate processor unit with one or both subsystems encased in a fancy copper chassis. Or needing a CD transport or music server at home and now you're looking at a $10,000 Wadia or $800 Marantz vs a $600 NAD CDP.

The glass inside an optical cable is more likely to break on a constantly moving system. One reason why DAPs moved to either coaxial 75ohm SPDIF or USB and why optical cables remained in cars but you're supposed to tuck the cables in properly and screw down the DSP unit (or why Pioneer builds it into a 1DIN chassis) to begin with.

At best, if you can even find one, you're going to have to order one of those really short, right angle plug optical cables that people used to use on their iRiver DAPs.

Maybe just a cheap mp3 player then from China then. Since I use my phone while listening to music, the OTG cable will most likely dislodge again. Is there any method to stop the connection loss? Thanks for the reply anyway.

I'm not sure I follow.

I mean you can't talk and listen to music at the same time, and on a DAP, you totally can't. With a phone, a call can automatically interrupt your music player, so you don't miss important calls.

Do you mean you're browsing on the phone while listening? I don't see how that leads to the cable getting dislodged, in the sense that I can't see how holding it in your hands would be worse than having it in your pocket. I mean I listen using my phone all the time, and while I don't use OTG when mobile, I haven't broken the headphone jack either.

Fiio Q5 Pro has BT for convenience. You can even have them in separate pockets now instead of one large brick made of two components strapped together.

Yes I mean while browsing. My port on my s9 is dodgy i think. I have to play around to find the connection when I charge it and then leave it. The usb is a little wobbly in the port housing.

You can also go with a Bluetooth amp like EarStudio M100 or Fiio BTR3 the ES100 has 2.5mm balanced with 2.2 volts output that is a bit more than Dragonfly Red that can run a lot of full sized headphones.

In your case, i'd recommend a bluetooth dac/amp.
Something simple like ES100 or the upcoming FiiO Btr5.
This prevents you of destroying the charging port of your S9.

On the other end there're such small devices like Shanling M0, you'll find convenient.

Aww that's a shame. I like the xDuoo 05 but there more like a desktop amp. You're probably right. I'll invest in a dragon fly. There definitely more convenient. Thanks a bunch

Is that with every cable or just that particular OTG cable? Because in some cases it's the USB plug that has the wrong tolerances to go into USB port, same way Amphenol RCA plugs easily go in and can be easily pulled out on purpose, but the more expensive Neutrik plugs require really pushing them in and good luck pulling them out without punching the wall if the equipment is on a rack near the wall.

In any case you can always just use a DAC-HPamp that has BT. Not like you don't have the ambient noise or distractions like knowing where you get off the train or whatever as you would when listening at home.

It's with most cables. Admittedly most are cheap ones. The orginal samsung charger is the same however. Luckily I can wireless charge. I will just get Santa to bring me some mid priced iems instead and leave the amp/cans combo for desktop use. Cant be bothered problem solving now. Thx ya'll.
