Hi there guys.

I am currently in the hunt out for a headphone and having no experience, I decided to come to the highly recommended website of audiophiles. I have never owned any great headphone and this would be my first. So, I want it to the best in my price range. I am a student and my budget is only 80$. I don't like too much bass and prefer details and surround effects more and I listen to all types of music. I have some headphones already in mind but I am unable to make a decision. Please help me out guys.

Also, if you can tell me of any special offers and stores to buy any of the headphones you mention, I'll be very glad. I am at Chicago. Thank you in advance.

Do you need to block out sound from outside? Do you need your headphones to not leak sound?

Btw the Audio Technica M30 and M35 are probably the same headphone, just that the M35 is foldable. Folding doesn't reduce bulk by much.

What headphones do you have now?

I would like the headphones to not leak much sound and blocking out outside sound is good too. But, I am open to anything as far as I can get good quality music. I have had only Creative Earbuds and currently I have Creative Ep 630.

Oh, those are in-ears that you have. Just exploring options here:
Do you have to get a pair of full-sized headphones? Or just anything that sounds better than what you have?

Fwiw, I personally think the Audio M30 is very good, and great for the money too.

Yes. I would like to get a headphone now. The first five headphones I have listed above are the ones I am considering mostly, but I have also heard very good things on Sennheiser. But as I have already stated, I have no idea on headphones. :)

MalVeaux, Thank you for your suggestion. I like to have bass but I don't like it overpowering or ruining the sound details. Please do write up if you have any other suggestions.

I own Creative Aurvana Live, they are exactly sounding like DENON AH-D1001 with Creative logo.
They are amazing headhpones and I can recomend them well. They have great details, deep bass and huge scene/separation of instruments for closed headphones
.
Any portable device can power them well, but with amplifier they start to show their potential, even with that they are 32 ohm.
The best headphones for the price, I seen many comparsions of them with AKG K701, Sennheisers HD 650 etc. which cost many times more..

I don't agree that the CAL's are in the same league as the K 701 or HD 650, but they are a good starting point and very good (closed) cans for their price.  The classic open AKG K 240 studios can be had these days for under $100 (currently under $90 shipped from Amazon).  Two interesting budget choices are the Superlux HD668B Dynamic Semi-Open Headphones (under $60) or the similar Superlux HD 681 Dynamic Semi-Open Headphones (at a bit over $35 shipped).

the Creative Aurvana Live! and Superlux HD-668B are the two best options in that price range. I haven't heard the Koss Porta Pro but many reviews seem to indicate that they're excellent cans. If you want big soundstage, go with the AD700 as suggested above. Otherwise, you can't really go wrong with the CAL! or Superlux HD-668B, and perhaps the PortaPro

Well, I have the HD600, not the HD650.
the CAL! are great headphones, but they simply can't compete with the Q701 amd HD600. The CAL! may compete very well with the headphones from $140 down, but the AKG and the Senn are just in a whole different league above the CAL!

I would write more about the differences, but I'm so sleepy right now. So sorry if I didn't give enough information.

Cheers!

Han Bao Quan: could you chime in on the CAL/701/650 comparison, since you have all three?
