Since my purchase of my DT880 the flood gates have opened. I have always been a music geek since middle school and finally getting some good equipment made me rediscover all my favorite tunes as well as new ones. Since joining this site I have pieced together a Rotel component system (RCD-1072, RC-1070,RB-1050) thanks to audigon.com. I have also purchased DT-770 pros and a Woo 6. I live in a pretty small apartment but I really would like to buy some speakers for my new system but not sure If I would really get the use out of them due to my congested confines and the whole respecting the neighbors thing. I have the bottom of the bottom line Klipsch bookshelf speakers which I thought were Ok untill I got my Beyers, now I can't stand them. They are used pretty much as low background music though, real enjoyment of music happens with my headphones. I've got a bit of a bug to buy either another seat of cans or should I get some nice bookshelfs to compliment my new get up? I didn't plan on getting an speaker amp but got a deal on the RB-1050 I couldnt pass up. So should I keep my Klipsch and try a new set of cans? Here's what I'm thinking... either some Senn HD650 (very curious about their sound) or DT990 (I am very much in love with Beyerdynamic) or some Bowers and Wilkins 601 S3 Bookshelf speakers (I have always wanted to own some B&Ws and I know there would be synergy with the Rotel gear).
Thanks!

The first question that comes to mind is: How's your listening room!?

The reason I ask, is that I happen to have a great speaker system...in a terribly sucky listening room.

If your room is up to the task; then it's almost a flip of the coin and only Y O U can answer that.

...but, if your room is a stinker.....

Good luck!

Yea it truly depends on the room because a 10,000 dollar speaker setup can sound worse than a 500 dollar one if it is in a horrible room

I have heard great things about the B&W speakers though

Yup; a room sure makes a difference. Our speakers sounded great in our old house, but in this new house...yuck.

...that's why I'm here!

If I were you, I would get the HD650 over the DT990.

Because I thought the DT880 has good highs and mids and sounds a little bright, while the HD650 has a good mids and lows and sounds a little warm.

The DT990 will give you more of the same as what you already have.

You may find that you like the warmer tonal sound from the HD650 over your DT880.

Thanks for the replies. As for my room. Hardwood floors, about 9 to 10ft high ceilings and I'd say 10 by 20 foot. No obstructions, all the furniture is against all walls. I guess I don't really NEED the speakers (heh, let alone more headphones) but I'm just bothered that I got a nice system hooked up to speakers I hate

. I finished paying off a student loan ($1,000 a month for the last 2 years) and just itchin to buy some toys I guess

Thats the spirit. Really sounds like you want the speakers. Even if you can only let em wail when the neighbors are gone, they will be with you at lower levels. HPs can always be upgraded later as you have a good setup now.

Well I took all your advice and bought both the speakers and the HD650 with Cardas cables

. I've gone crazy since joining this site. I have always wanted a nice setup but always just gotten by with bad equipment. It's still music first, but I am amazed at how great my music really sounds since buying the Beyers. Here's my final (for now) setup. Now the UPS,USPS,DHL, and FedEx Waiting game.

CD Player: Rotel RCD-1072
Pre Amp: Rotel RCD-1070
Amp: RB-1050
Speakers: B&W DM601 series 3 bookshelfs.
Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT880, Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, Sennheiser HD650 with Cardas cables, Sennheiser PX100, and Sennheiser CX-300.
Headphone Amps: Pocket Cmoy, Woo Audio 6, and a Creek OBH-11.
Cables: Audioquest Diamondback 1m Interconnects, 3 Mit EXp2 RCA interconnects, Monster speaker cables, Kimber Kable 3.5mm to RCA interconnects.

Quite modest to alot of people I'm sure, but I'm very excited about my city rig. I just haven't spent that much money on myself for a long long time. I did buy everything used except for the Woo, 90% of the cables, and all headphones. I would have spent that much on ciggarettes in a year in Chicago (15 year 2 pack a day smoker now a 9 month non smoker!!)

Hmmm..... I should check out turntables....
