I'm looking to replace some caps in my DAC with some higher quality ones - I am wondering if i have any leeway on the specifications on the caps.

E.g. I have five stock 35v 33uf caps i want to replace. Could i replace them with caps of higher volatage or capacitance? For example could i replace them with Nichi Muse 50v 47uf or 50v 33uf?

Where? In the signal path or in the powersupply. The most important thing is to rate the same or higher then what is currently.

But there is a catch. You need to take care with what you are replacing. Many people do not realise there may be very good design choices in why a selected part was chosen. e.g. an LM317 is almost inductive on the output from an electrical perspective, if you increase capacitor size you are more likely to bring resonance closer or futher down the audio band. If you "upgrade" to audiophile caps you'll likely end up with lower ESR with less electrical dampning making the resonance that already exists worse.

That is just one example. However usually nothing bad comes of upgrading caps in the signal path or the filter caps on the input. In this case you most probably want to go for a higher capacitance for any effect at all.
