Hey guys,

I know quite a few of you have had experience with AKG headphones, I am just wondering if anyone knows how to open a pair of K301s up!

Its cause I've been trying for the past 30 minutes and I have had no success =(

I wanna open them up to see what I can do to them, recable / repads, and then see what else can be done to restore them!

I wouldn't bother putting new pads on a k301 if the original pads still have intact vinyl.

As for the sound, I recommend getting some felt from a fabric store and cutting out a ring that covers the holes in the baffle disc just under the inner edge of the earpads. Should perk up the bass a bit.

I was planning to get new pads for the K701s as a spare. They will fit the 301's no problem.

And in terms of bass, wow, I actually am surprised that the 301s lack bass even MORE than the 701s. (this is of course, without felt yet)

So, I found the manual from AKG with instructions on how to dismantle the K301:

The infamous AKG elastics were dying of old age so I took some photos changing them.

First step is to open the cups. Use a screw driver or similar tool and press the latch from the inside, at the same time pulling the cap downwards:

Should come off with some push and pull.

Then it's only to cut the rivet end and old elastic off and tie some new elastic around the rivet. Old elastic:

Ready for use.ericj's suggestion of covering the baffle's outer ring of holes - see pic below - with felt is well worth trying.

The fabric pads of K501 (or K601/K701) will also make a drastic change of sound, smoother, less honky and more detailed but with less bass.It won't turn the ugly duckling into a swan, but with the felt and further cup damping a much better headphone.
