To start off, I'm definitely a noob when it comes to headphones. I wouldn't consider myself an audiophile but I do appreciate some good sound. The extent of my listening experience is limited to some Skullcandy Smokin' Buds and a pair ofTritton AX 720s. I'm sure many would agree that neither provide much of a quality listening experience.

Anyways, I mainly listen to dubstep as well as some alternative rock. My source will either be my computer or my Samsung Droid Charge.

I've limited myself down to a handful of headphones thanks to a few guides here on this site but I am clueless as to which would be the best decision. My budget is probably about $60-70.

Here's what I've found so far:

1)JVC HA RX700
2)Superlux HD661
3)Sony MDR-XB500
4)JVC HA-M750

Feel free to suggest anything else in the price range and please evaluate the headphones I've been looking at. I'm looking for something comfortable, somewhat portable, and likely closed, as I will be listening to these on an airplane this summer, and don't want to disturb people.

Thanks.

The Creative Aurvana Live may fit your budget (even better if you can find a used pair going for pretty cheap). They sound good for the price (review here), plus they're light and super comfortable IMO (not foldable though). Also I'm not sure if their sound blockage is good enough for airplane use (they do a decent job when used in the office though, and they leak fairly little to notice). I don't have the other cans on your list so can't say much about them.

So basically all of my choices weren't particularly good? Haha.

My only concern with the Koss DJ100s are that based on a few reviews, they sound terrible on a portable source (like my phone) when not being used with a portable amp. I'd prefer not to buy one.

Otherwise, the CALs look pretty enticing. How about the ATH-M30s?

Thanks for the help so far.

Mkay. Note taken.

I'm pretty much set on the CALs. Anybody have any experience with the Superlux HD661s or Sony MDR-XB500s? They are a bit cheaper but I'm just wondering how they would compare.

Never heard both but from what I've read, the XB500 are not as accurate in higher range and the emphasis on bass does color the whole spectrum. So Superlux HD661 may be a better alternative, as far as I know, they should be more balanced although the comfort may not be great. Reviews are available on the forum for both but after all, I still think CALs are the safer choice.

I think I'll take your advice and stick with the CALs. I'd rather not be disappointed.

Btw. I just found a good deal on a Sony MDR-V6. They would be slightly more expensive but they seem to be pretty popular around here. So between those and the CALs, which would be better for my music tastes?

The V6 should be good too but they tend to be slightly colder, though I believe they can deliver slightly more accurately than the un-modded CALs (nothing wrong with the stock CALs, they are fun but I do feel they sound a bit hollow out of the box, maybe it's just because their very deep soundstage). It pretty much depends on the portion of what you listen to, if it's mainly electronic/dubstep then go with the CALs, otherwise V6 may be a better choice for rock. If there's a good deal for either, you won't be disappointed.

Panasonic HTF600, retails for $60, on Amazon for $30.  it sounds awesome.  crazy for the price.  Dsnuts did a review of it, introducing it to Head-Fi.
