Hello, I'm going to buy a DAC to replace my Xonar U/.
Actually, with the Xonar U7, I'm using the Dolby Home Theater v4 software to equalize the front-output, to normalize the sound (this is a must in for watching videos) and to enable virtual surround with headphones while I play videogames.
When I need to listen to music whit my cans, I disable, with a simple click, the Dolby software and use Equalizer APO that is configured to work with the headphone output of my sound card.

I think that the Dolby software will not work with other DAC (such as Modi 2) and I found the Razer Surround software for virtual surround and for volume normalization, but the problem is that you need to enable virtual surround to use volume normalization, so if I just want to watch a video with my 2.1 speakers and no virtual surround (I don't like it but videogames) I can't.

My questions are:

1) How can I replace the Dolby Home Theater v4 software? I really need a simple equalization, volume normalization and, possibly, virtual surround;
2) Is there a way to disable/enable EqualizerAPO on the fly without restart the pc?

Thank you in advance and excuse me for my imperfect english.

It seems you want the features of a sound card, without actually using a sound card.

I'm thinking you should just keep using the Asus Xonar U7.

Hi, I don't agree with you. I think that there are alternatives for DAC.
As an example, I found Peace that is a GUI for EqualizerAPO that allow me for a simple, but complete, equalizer and a profile system. With a right click on its icon on the status bar, I can change the equalizer profile (one for cans and one for speakers).
As regards the Virtual Surround there is Razer Surround, so I only need to find, if possible, a volume normalizer that I use only when I watch film or videos.

Check out the free programs MPC-HC (K-Lite) and VLC.
They might come with the features your looking for.

Cyperlinks PowerDVD is a great video player and might come with features your looking for.

I hear mixed reviews on Razor software.

Here's something that could work.

  VST parametric equalizer: http://rs-met.com/freebies.html
VST wrapper: http://www.yohng.com/software/foobarvst.html
music player: http://www.foobar2000.org
system-wide EQ: http://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm

You can use VST plugins (such as in foobar2000) to do any type of DSP and then use VSTHost to apply it system-wide. Just search on Google for the ones you want, as well as guides for how to use them.
