Hello experts
smily_headphones1.gif

I'm looking for some new headphones but the more I search the more confused I get. Sadly there isn't anyone selling anything but cheap headphones and gaming headsets near me so I either have to know what to go listen to beforehand and make a trip out of it or just buy them online (more likely). My ears are in no way trained since I haven't listened to anything quality-wise in 10+ years so I'm not really sure what to look for.

With that out of the way here's what I'm looking for:
  1. Price idea; around $200?
  2. Good sound stage
  3. Something that doesn't kill the tiny old Yamaha RX-E400 amplifier I use for my computer
  4. Mostly for music but I do sometimes use them for gaming too
  5. Music example: Opeth ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0cDmm7Cz_k )

I have been told to look at Beyerdynamic DT 770 / 880 / 990 Edition and Sennheiser HD 598.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

770 is closed headphone
880 are semi open so people can hear what you are listening to

open have a better sound stage and more accurate bass
close do get a little warm after a few hours

beyerdynamic also sell their headphones with different ohms
the higher the ohm, the more power you will need so not best for things like cell phone
the 770 have an 80 ohm model which I htink is best compromise

audio technica 900x is what you really want, not sure if they still make them, maybe u can ge some cheap
m50x are great too but more bass heavy and are mostly for music, not speech

I reccomend the AKG k553. They really impressed me when I got a chance to try them. Good bass but not overpowering, lots of good detail, only problem is they were a bit large so they didn't seem like the would be very portable.

Thanks for the replies. I just gotta add that I don't intend to use them with a phone. I'll have a look at your recomendations right away.

EDIT: Well, I can't find any of them on sites around here (denmark). That's strange.
