hey. whats up everyone. this is my first post. so go lightly on me.
let me explain my situation, im trying to get into the recording end of music. i looked into a good set of monitors, but mid level ones cost around 500. and my current living location kind of blocks me from playing anything louder than talking volume.
therefore, i started checking into headphones. seems like a little better setup for me too.
only problem is i dont know where to choose from, there are alot of different models and i dont have many/any friends who do any kind of audio stuff (im an artist).

so here was what i was looking for:
-less than $200 (give or take a little)
-good for monitoring hard rock and metal
-if possible, without needing an amp to sound good.
-comfortable to wear for many hours.
-a good set of headphones, i dont want to be upgrading in a few months cause they sound like crap

those are the main things i was looking into.
maybe someone can help me decide on what to look into.
thanks for your time!

laters.

the sony MDR-V6 or MDR-7506 (identical except the "pro label") are well considered as monitoring cans. And once you've changed the pads for the pads of the Beyer DT250 (make a search on the forum) they're extremely comfortable. They're easily driven (very). They have a wonderful bass. And they won't cost you more than 100$.

i would mostly be spending time in Pro tools mixing different instruments for hard rock music.
if this changes anyting.

thx.

At the cheap end, I would go with 00940's reco or the Senn HD280. In my opinion, for dedicated home studio use the HD280 is a better phone than the V6. If you want something that's all-purpose (i.e need phones not just for mixing but also for portable, etc) then the V6 is better.
With a fairly brief listen, the Ultrasone HFI-650 also sounded pretty good but I haven't owned one, so I can't comment on how good a studio phone it is... Perhaps mtillman can elaborate.
I'm not entirely sure how good an Audio-Technica ATH-A900 would be for mixing either. But it is a very good headphone and at under $200 from Audiocubes, fairly good value compared to the rest of the pack.

many thanks.
i think im gonna check into the sony 7506/v6 a little more. since i would use them for stuff besides mixing.

do they make any accessories for the 7506? im going to check out getting diff ear cups for them, since i saw an old post on how to swap them for beyer dt250 cups.
what i mean is like changing the looks of it. i love the way grados look for example. sonys just look kinda plain.

anways. thanks for the help. put in any more advice if you find it necessary..
