Currently looking for a upgrade to my ATH-m50s. While these have been “OK”, I’m looking for something different. I use my headphones for gaming and movies primarily, although I do listen to music regularly (only at home, all genres including instrumental).

From the research I’ve done it seems like I’m looking for an open headphone and the primary one that I see recommended is the Sennheiser HD598 as the sound stage is very large. This is desirable as I’m looking for a headphone that would be very immersive for both gaming and movies (ie. Playing skyrim). I’ve also head these are extremely comfortable, which is a must as I wear them for hours at a time.

The one issue is that I see with these headphones is that people report the bass not being very good. This is worrisome as it could mean that explosions for example, would not sound “present” / very realistic.

What can people suggest in terms of a headphone that would suit that purpose what I am looking for.

I'm wearing the 555s right now, and the bass is just fine. Now with the 598s, everything is going to be much better.

I highly recommend the Senns for a low budget can!

The HD558 uses the same driver as the HD598 and the HD558 is cheaper.
Is this for PC gaming or console gaming?
To me the HD558 has decent bass and for gaming I would assume you would not want a strong bass as it would wear on the ears, while gaming for long terms.

These are for PC gaming + movies primarily.

I'm willing to go outside to above price range and maybe get a dac+amp if it means getting the right headphone for the job

The Creative Labs Sound Blaster Z sound card, $60-$90, comes with a CS4398 DAC chip and a built in headphone amplifier.
Leave a lot of your budget for headphones.

598s are fine (i got them 2 weeks ago for my dad and my dad doesn't like them so I'm using them:( ) but the bass is severely lacking. Keep in mind I'm a 650 fan though. Daft Punk seems dead with 598s especially with Homework. 598s are nice with Michael Jackson or Adele although I like my Grado 325Is better for them. Well I feel like my 598s need to find a new home soon.
btw I am using the Graham Slee SRG2 with 598
