Hi, I'm new to your forum but would appreciate any recommendations or help offerings anyone may have. I'm a 70's guy who admittedly is not technical and even dislikes shopping Home Dept, Radio Shack or True Value when I can avoid them. In fact in 77, if not for my musician friends I'm not so sure if my stereo would of got hooked up. Flash forward 40 years and I'm ready to set up a place to play the hundreds of LPs I dragged from NY to Seattle when I moved west. Hence my dilemma, I know I need speakers and a turntable but do I need both an amplifier and turner? Yeah I'm the guy who couldn't work the VCR either and took years to get the cell phone. Any help most appreciated.

Do you currently have an amp or receiver? Do you wish to be able to listen to the radio on this system? Do you have a phono preamp? Do you use headphones? What is an overall budget for us?

Hey,

So since youre a 70s guy, grab a vintage receiver, something from the 70s,a pair of 8 ohm speakers, either floor standing or bookshelf depending upon size of room and a turntable.

Connect the turntable to phono-in of receiver, make sure your turntable is grounded. Connect speakers and enjoy.

I own lots of modern high end gear, and my old receivers still sound great and get used daily...and wont break the bank either.

Just looked on C-List Seattle and plenty of everything you need.

I was looking at a garage sale in my area and they have the following, would it would do the trick? Do I need either of the turners if I'm not playing any radio? Already have a pair of speakers, or do I wire the turntable through a turner versus a amplifier? Thanks
Denon Stereo Integrated Amplifier, Model PMA-2000R
NAD Stereo Tuner, Model 4150
Carver FM Stereo Tuner, Model TX-11
Bang & Olufsen Turntable, Beograd TX 33/45

Cant find much info about this. Google is your friend.

Personally I'd stick with a 70s model Sansui,Marantz or Pioneer. Easy to get them serviced, with loads of extra parts floating around out there.
Also make sure which ever amp,or receiver you get has a working phono input. AUX or Tape-in wont work on a turntable.

No.
The difference between an amp and a receiver is the ability to bring in radio. Both have an amp built in. As long as a straight up amp has a phono input you should be fine with that, although I personally prefer receivers. Why? Theyre so damn pretty.

You can also read this thread. Lots of useful info, and any further questions would probably be better answered there.

For$129 a Schiit Mani is a very good buy and can run several different cartridges.

You need the amplifier to drive the speakers, as well as a phono preamp if it isn't built into the TT, and the amplifier has to have a preamp to control the volume (this is different from the TT's phono preamp). Note the following classifications however.

1. Integrated Amplifier - has both the preamp and power amp in the same chassis. May include phono preamp circuit in the phono input, but double check each model if it's an actual phono preamp input (and not just a label) as well as the compatibility with the TT cartridge (it's the thing with the needle on it) as some only run either MC or MM.

2. Stereo Receiver - an integrated amplifier with other feaures, like an FM tuner, or digital inputs. Note this is not the same as a home theater receiver, which is similar but handles more than two channels. Also some newer amps might be an integrated amp with a digital input, but might not be labelled "receiver.

Does anyone have an opinion as to which is the better quality tuner, Carver TX-11 or the NAD model 4150?

I'd hate to break it to you but most people here aren't even using Sirius and XM anymore. Nearly everybody here is on Spotify or Tidal now. No need for FM, and also government emergency announcements go through cellular networks. Most people still on radio are listening to Joe Rogan or Rush Limbaugh nowadays but even those guys are doing podcasts now.

Vinyl just had a resurgence because properly recorded albums are still on there even if the same album has very high gain on the CD release.
