With that price range and those goals, get a Plantronics.

You wont even need to bother with an amp then.

On a more helpful note: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/ for lots of info on DIY amps.

You may not find many phones in your price that are going to be helped much by an amp. Maybe spend more on the phones, and less on the amp.

Otherwise, is there a Rite Aid near you?

Plantronics aren't exactly high quality. The mics or the headphones. I've been very disapointed in mine

Plantronics is probably the best bet with that kind of budget and for that kind of usage though.

If you move up to around $100 your choices open up a bit. If you want to keep it cheap, the Grado SR-60's, as low as $62 shipped, are probably the cheapest great phone. Beware though it will expose the artifacts of your lower bitrate MP3's. Do you need isolation? The Grados won't give it. Also the SR-60's wont be greatly enhanced by an amp. If though you go for the $99 shipped Alessandro MS1's...

Wow, where have I heard this question before. Oh wait, yeah, last week, and the week before....
Get some Sony MDR-V6. End of story.

Where do you live. If in the US start with HeadRoom, a sponser of this site. They also have a return policy.

For cheap SR-60's try here. The Alessandro MS1's can only be purchased here. Sony V6's (not V600's) are difficult to track down so try eBay. If you live in the Western US near a Fry's they are available in their stores.

Use the search button to read reviews of each.

Huge, but is another possibility. They and the V6's are often compared. If you need closed, consider these your two options. If you're open to no isolation, your quality will increase with the other suggestions. BTW, what type of music do you listen to?

If that means you're going to go portable at some point the V6's are the option. The 280's are huge, and the Grados are open so your neighbors will hear. Was going to throw in the Sony MDR-CD780's in the mix from eTronics, but they are also open.
