Hey guys I'm pretty new here. Been reading for awhile just never posted. I have a pair of Senn 650's and Grado SR-80's, both of which I find somewhat flawed. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy them, but they have their issues. The Grado SR-80's are unrefined, a little too forward and are kind of bright. The Senn 650's are a little shut in and dark sounding, but have nice detail and overall tonality. I was looking for a closed ear headphone while im practicing in simlab. I am currently a dental student. I need something that will block out the drill noise, my md33's are ok but the SQ is kind of poor. I was thinking of the AKG 271s. I think they might have the midrange I'm looking for. I'm not too picky about bass as long as it isn't sloppy. I'd like to have nice trebble and an airy sorta sound too. Any suggestions? I can't wait for the AKG 701's to come out. They seem very promising, since I like the midrange of the 501's (too bad the bass and trebble are ehh). I'm using Magnepan 3.6r's as reference btw. Thanks in advance guys.

I would recommend the Beyerdynamic DT250/250. I tried a whole bunch of closed headphones before I decided on these. They have a very nice warm midrange, and good extension on both ends. The don't have the bass of the famed DT770s, but they are also not nearly as sloppy. I won't go into great detail, but before buying the DT250/250 I auditioned the DT770, Senn HD280, Sony 7506, and ATH M40b, and the 250 was the best all around performer. I did not get to try the AKG K271s, but if they are anything like my AKG K240 Monitors of DFs, they will be very lean on bass. Also I prefer the Beyers velour earpads over the AKG pleather ones.

I tried the Beyer 250-80's and preferred the Senn HD-280's. Fabulous isolation. I use them on a commuter train every day and they make the world go away.

What's your budget? I am satisified with my Beyer 250-250's (needs an amp, BTW), and it can be bought for less than $150.

I think the K271S will suit you well in terms of sound signature and isolation, but I'm not sure how practical it is for wearing during work. It tends to slide around on my head a bit.

Ai, what's the budget? Just got my Sennheiser HD 25, currently they are burning in the cosmic blasting Missy... very nice. Of course it is not time to judge the sound yet, but they have that typical "the music is played indoors"-effect of closed phones.

Did you think about canalphones? Unless you have to take then on&off a lot that might be a good alternative considering size, isolation (especially leakage) and sound.

Thanks for the replies guys. My budget is under 250. I don't really move around too much when I'm drilling so it should be ok. I'm looking for a transparent midrange and smooth extended highs. I'm not too picky with bass as long as it isn't sloppy. I'm going to listen to the Beyer 250's. I will most likely be using a PA2V2 for these and my ipod.

Are you opposed to canalphones? Ety's make pretty transparent, clean, and articulate cans with isolation that can't be matched!

A900s are a good sealed headphones that is really good sounding.

HD595 is another option as well.

Either of the two really need an amp. A900s are better choice without an amp. They sound no different with an amp. that is to say that sound great just out of the ipod. I had a pair.

I've tried a lot of in ear phones and they just all seemed too shut in for me. The stage is really narrow nad there is either no top end or they are bright. I've tried the e3c, md33 and my friends er6(i think). If Ihad lots of money I wouldnt mind trying the U10's though

.

I have it narrowed down to
Beyer 250
A900
271s

Not sure what to get yet. I want nice midrange with smooth highs and decent lows. I'm not a bass head.

I would say.. rob a bank and get the UE-10s..

Beyer 250 (recessed high's, emphasis on mids and bass)
A900 (slight recessed mids)
271s (Lean in bass)

So you can pick your poison. I think the A900s are the best out of the bunch.
