Hi guys! I kinda need help for a friend. He’s looking for a nice headphone, he asked me about it (he called me headphone freak!) and I’m feeling bad as I can’t really answer his question. I was kinda hesitant to post this hear, because I think you guys will empty his wallet in no-time. He just wants a sub-$100 headphone, so take it easy!

This is the deal: He went to Hong Kong, bought an AudioTechnica SJ3. He preferred the SJ5, but apparently it was sold out. He’s not very satisfied with the SJ3. Basically he thinks the isolation lacks and also he prefers a headphone which is not so bass heavy. So before he orders the SJ5, he asked me for advice and a comparison of the brands AKG, Sennheiser and AudioTechnica.

My first thought was to recommend him some IEMs, like the Shure E4C. Great treble and definitely bass light, plus great isolation. Don’t know whether he likes IEMs, so I also thought about the K81DJ. Seems like people here love them. Or the Sennheiser PX100. I’ve never heard either one of them, so I can’t really comment. How's the isolation? How's the bass? I do remember him liking the K701 last time he was over…

So anyone here like to help out?

To be honest, I haven't got a clue. I've directed him to this site, lets hope he answers. And lets hope he doesn't leave this place $1000 lighter! Don't tell him to buy the UltraSone Ed9 or Stax 4070!!

Beyerdynamic DT231 maybe? Definitely a more brighter sounding headphone, very comfy, decent soundstage.

Hello guys,

I'm the friend Chimpie's talking about. Thank you all for your advice so far. Well here's the deal: I need headphones to listen to music while I commute to work. A bike/bus combination. I want one with good isolation.

I listen to pop, rock and soul music.

What are your opinions of the AKG K518DJ?

its a jet black K81 DJ, same drivers and everything, just different color.

This is what I've found on the K518DJ. It's basically the same a K81DJ, which is highly regarded here. If yu search the forum, you can find lots of impressions on the K81DJ!

That is quite useful info. Does it sound anything like the K701? The K701 didn't sound like bass heavy at all...

Could be too late, but I recommend MDR-V6 ($70ish) for durability, portability, SQ, long coily cord, & value.

Great first closed headphone...

A great first open headphone is the KSC75 ($15), and if you don't like the clip-ons you can get a headband for $5 and alternate between headband & clip-ons if you'd like.
