I'm thinking about getting deeper into my hobby and trying out an amp with my canalphones. The only thing is, I've never researched an amp and need, initially, recommendations for the various brands and models. I'll likely start out as cheap as possible with the highest quality/lowest cost amp first.

i dont think you really need an amp for the iems you have right now...

maybe try out some full size cans first then consider getting an amp

I don't know pretty much about cheapo amps. The only one I own is my Penguin Amp Ultra caffeine with my UE TFi's. Using the line out from my iTouch there is a noticeable difference in SQ. For $69 I think it's pretty good. But I don't know how much would it help from a headphone jack...
