Need Advice! Grado SR80 of Senn HD555 ??

Most people around here consider Grado's to be the absolute best for rock music, so I recommend taking a look at those. Sennheiser's tend have a darker sound, which is much better suited for classical music, although I can't be sure about the 555's. But seems like the Sr80's will be the ones making you happy.

P.S. you spelled "of" rather than "or"

I've had the HD555 for rock *sold them, hehe* and let's just say they don't have that foot-tapping style that Alessandros / Grados *I have MS-2s* have that really make rock come alive.

Not to mention that the HD555 kind of needs an amp to bloom and sound as it should. Stick with the Grados, your music and ears will thank you.

I haven't heard the SR80 but I have (had) the SR60. If you like the sound of the 555's but want something a little more for rock look at the HD485's. About the same price as the SR60's (I got mine for 75 shipped) and imo much better. The 485's have a smaller soundstage than the 555's but a much bigger one than the SR60's. They are also warmer with more bass and more forward than the 555's. There is no real competition on build quality and comfort with the SR60, 485's wins easily. I have the 555's the 485's and the SR60's and the SR60's just went back to Headroom. I can see how people like the Grados though but I just think the 485's are much better.

, many people complain of pain in the ears with the Grado.

I would recommend that for the price of the SR80, go for the Alessandro MS1. Anyway, for Rock, the Grados are simply great. I had the SR80 for 3 months before I sold it for the 325i and now have the RS1. Going up the line increased the soundstage and refined the sound a bit, but it kind of also reduced the foot tapping fun for Rock & Metal. In my opinion, if you want soundstage, go for the Sennheiser, but this increased soundstage of Senns won't give you the punchy and absolute fun you get with the Grados. I absolutely loved the SR80, give it some rock/metal and enjoy the pure audio bliss with its fast, tight & impactful performance.

I feel Rock is Grado's turf & suggest the Senn. fan-boys not to waste time fighting in vain on it. When it comes to clasical that thrives on soundstage, we'll invite you

you know, if grado made comfortable cans then i would definitely buy an sr80 now... but that's currently holding me back. i can stand the ugly design (imo), but comfort is one of my top priorities.

maybe we can give mr. grado some feedback?

No, I haven't heard them, but I would also suggest the HD485's.

I have no pain with the bowl pads, although that doesn't mean they're comfortable though, hehe. They do tend to slip off too, but the sound is quite awesome for rock. Just try them and see if you like them or not, I'm sure you can return them if you don't like them *say, if you're buying from headroom*. So just take the plunge, see what happens!

I own both the Sr60 and the HD485. THe HD485 just hit 100 hours of play time and the sound changed significantly. THe mid-range opened up and the bass settled down. They are slightly dark but have detail and a balanced tone skewed toward thick. I enjoy my SR60's for the first 30-45 minutes then they just wear me out with their forward approach. THe HD485 have played everything Ive thrown at them fairly well but they excel at rock and electronic(IMHO). I think that $75 bux shipped from Amazon for the HD485 is a pretty good deal. They are very comfortable, easily driven and feel like tanks.
Hope it helps.
