Hi guys,

I have simple question (but answer is probably not that simple).

What is the bassiest 5751 tube?

Background: in my preamp I rolled no-name (actually it said 12AX7 Behrenger, but I know they don't do tubes, so I suspect it would be Chinese or Russian) 12AX7 with pair of NOS Raytheon 5751 windmill getters. The difference in midrange and especially on top end was breathtaking. Super clear highs, smooth as butter midrange. Beautiful tubes.

When Darths were my main can I didn't have issue, all was fine.

Now I spend most of the time with Denon 2000, which have much better midrange and ton more highs than Darths, but bass is weaker.

Just out of curiosity I rolled old 12AX7 back in. Grainy highs were back, but I noticed quite a increase in bass, not bloated, nice and punchy all the way down.

So I'm looking for (affordable)* 5751 tube that will have more bass than Raytheon, I can sacrifice a bit in mid and high range where Denons have enough headroom. I'd consider 12AX7 as well, but would prefer 5751's.

All replies will be appreciated.

* in case of suggesting gold pin Sylvanias. Impossible to get without selling one of the kidneys first.

I happen to have 2 Sylvania Gold Brand 5751s =)

One's NOS still unused

Anyway, another excellent, in-production tube I have found that is excellent is the 12AX7 from the Shuguang factory in China. Make sure it uses the 9th Generation Tooling or 9GT for short. It really is superbly detailed, has good top end extension. Not so warm mids and fast punchy bass.

5751 GB leaves it for dead though

FWIW, I swapped in some 5751 instead of 12ax7s in my amp and there was a good improvement. I just bought some EH ones. Small money - I should really try to find some more 5751. Great find.

Thanks d-cee. I'll have a look at these.

Perhaps it would be better idea to re-post this question in Amps section, more people visiting there.

Cheers

PS: @ d-cee: Any remote chance of selling a pair of GB Sylvanias (or you have just one left)?
