The stock cable is messed up. Any slight movement of the cable and it stops sending power to the D1.
 
It's the same cable the HRT Musicstreamer uses.

I also contacted Audioengine just in case they feel generous and send me one for free, but I don't have high hopes for that.

I would recommend an Audioquest Coffee USB cable:

Audioengine D1 DAC isn't very good.  I would save up and get the better one.

I'm definitely planning on upgrading to a Schiit Byfrot, but not anytime soon. Anyways, Audioengine are sending me a free cable.
