Any sugestions on a fast, musical sub for about $500 or less? I need it to keep up with a pair of bookshelf speakers.

build one.

sub amps are cheap used (check ebay)

and get a driver from visaton (there are many other companies too)
these can run you anywhere from $40 to $500 and NO! price does not equal performance.

build an enclosure out of mdf or sonotube.

if you want, i can provide some web sites to lead you in the right direction.

if you try, you'd probably be able to build two for that price and have stereo bass!

Thanks.

What sites can you recommend that can give me a little help in the Diy area? I've never done any DIY experiments but I'm willing to try.

Adire Rava - read rave reviews on AudioAsylum, nothing to touch it for the price for music. (at least not assembled for purcahse)

http://www.diyaudio.com is the most comprehensive forum for this type of task. Looking in members' signatures for websites is a great way to find resources as you browse through their posts.

I think I'm going to give the Adire a try. I wish the enclosure was little smaller but it'll have to do.

HSU VTF-2 works well for me. These should be available pretty cheap, since HSU now has a VTF-3.
