So my Pioneer DV-525 is refusing to read most cds. I'm in the market for a cheap replacement. I'd love a Phillips 963sa but that maybe a little over my budget. The DVD function still works fine on the pioneer so cd only is fine. I was looking at the Cambridge
D-300 SE at audioadvisor, 199 bucks.

Cambridge DS-300E CD Player

Has anyone heard this player ? Any comments ? It will be used with Grado SR-80 and regular stereo speakers. Would this be a suitable transport for a later DAC upgrade ? How reliable do you think it would be ? The pioneer dvd player started giving me problems after only 2 years. Thanks for any replies.

Haven't heard the Cambridge, in fact I haven't heard this either. But at $150.00 plus shipping, and the fact that it's the 963A's little brother, it's worth a look.

Cambridge CD players are normally good for the money mate, although try to find a D500SE if you can stretch to it, or go second hand and find a CD4SE or CD6, which were certainly giant killers. I'd imagine those would outperform any budget DVD player under a high price...

I think I've changed my mind about it. Audio Advisor said the cambridge was better than the 763sa, but there are a lot of failures and qa issues reported on Audioasylum; displays goings out and transports dying. So maybe I will keep saving my pennies. I really hoped to get something better than the cheap mass market stuff that breaks after 2 years. What's the best street price on the 963sa ? 200 is already pushing it, but waiting another month or two sounds like it would be worth it.
