Don't know if this is the right place, but I need to get something to play music in my gym area while I work out. Needs to be loud and have a lot of bass. I was looking at this Sony unit, and I don't want to spend any more money than this.

I could get them to price match Walmart ($177) and I have $55 in coupons so I could get it for around $120ish.

Any other choices?

Seriously...go to fleabay and get a Altec Lansing Im7.

Its got bass, volume, and it's cheap there. Retail is $250.00. I just got 2 more. Sound one to an employee and she was thrilled and taking the other one overseas with me. I'll sell that off to someone there eventually and make a few bucks.

Last time I got 2 for $110 delivered. Bought the carrying strap which was more expensive than the unit!

Cheaper and IMO much better than the Sony.

Read cnet reviews and any other comparative reviews. Nothing but raves. Refurbs are a great deal incidentally.

You'll still be better off price and sound wise by getting an IM7 and attaching most any cheapish CD player to it portable or not.

The look you'll have to decide on.

I think the versatility might be a big plus as well.

That unit takes most any cd player or DAP

And how much bass will this throw out? It doesn't seem like it would have a good bass response.

I also don't even own a CD player and don't want to buy something just to make the thing work.

Go to Cnet.com do a search on it. Try to find a dealer, Best Buy or the like that has it.

I bought two other non-portable, but smallish systems. $250 to $450.

Neither have as much Bass and clean volume

I'm not being paid by Altec Lansing to sell these. Do searches and get buyers opinions.

I used to sell high end gear in the 80's at my store.

Cnet said that songs with a lot of bass made the unit sound muddy, and that doesn't sit well with me since all my songs have a lot of bass in them from the drums. Unless I can hear it in the store with a sample of my music now I wouldn't feel comfortable buying it. Maybe that was an isolated review, I don't know.

For $0.02.

I have a MHC-GX450, which appears to be an earlier version of this "system".

Very disappointed. Last Sony bookshelf system I plan on buying. It is the user interface I hate most. Too much effort to get it to sound "right" (to my ears).

Bumping this up because I want to know of this IM7 would work on a new Zune 80. I heard the Sony unit at Best Buy the other day and the bass seems too bloated, though I was only getting a badly broadcasted radio station.

Do you know of any stores off hand that may have one set up to listen to? I didn't see any at Best Buy last time I went there.
