I need some closed backs for about 20% of my listening time, perhaps rising..
So looking for something complimentary to my existing open backs really.

I have Shure 840s which I love for vocals, but a bit lean/hollow elsewhere these days.
Previously had Ultasone Pro900i which were hateful even after mods.

Focal Elegia is discounted, plus the Fostex Ebony massdrop seems interesting .....if a little hard to source for me.
Is there anything else I should be looking for?

The Meze/Drop 99 Classic Noir is pretty great value at $200 USD.

This thread should be a good read for you to skim through to get some ideas and good impressions from closed-back lovers.

The Elegia at around $4-500 is hard to beat. For the $600 they seem to be going for now, I'd pick up a used Denon AH-D7200. The Elegia's stock tuning isn't terrible but it can get a little shrill with some recordings and the stock cable is absolute garbage.

Seems other way round here this side of the pond, that AH-D7200 is cheaper used some nice ones available. Will look into them:)

The D7200 is often described as "a more refined Fostex" and from what I've heard I agree. They're easily my favorite closed backs.

Just FYI the Fostex ebony/purpleheart/Maple have a tiny slit around the cup that makes them semi-closed, so they have a bit of noise leakage but not as much as pure open. Not sure if you already have some but when I wanted a closed back to compliment I ended up opting to get a decent IEM instead (DUNU SA6) so I can have something to use on the go.
