Hi, first-time poster here. I signed up expressly to ask this question.

First, though, some background: My situation at work has recently taken a strange turn. Evidently my officemate has the unfortunate combination of hyper-sensitive hearing and bad cases of ADHD and OCD. The impact on me is that the headphones that the company gives out (Cheapish Targus noise-cancelling headphones) aren't doing a good enough job of keeping my music in my ears, and he's frequently complaining to me, and to his manager (and indirectly, to my manager) about the noise coming from my headphones, unless I listen at about 8% of max volume. My preferred listening level is about 40-55 percent. Unfortunately, switching offices or something along those lines is not possible at this time.

So I need recommendations for either headphones or earphones that do an excellent job of ensuring that the only person hearing my music is me. I prefer over-the-ear headphones but I'm open to trying new things.

My musical tastes are diverse, encompassing pretty much everything but rap and country. I'm looking for a good low-end for the punchy bassline of happy hardcore as well as a good high end for the melodies of classical.

My budget is about $150, but I'm flexible. Thanks for your help!

Since you prefer over the ears cans I just heard these ATH-ANC7. I know they are noise canceling, but they were really good. I have the ATH-ES7 and they are great. With the ATH-ANC7s I had them up around 80 - 85 db and a person 3 feet away from me couldn't even hear the music. I have IEMs as well. You co-worker won't be able to hear the Shure IEMs. Good luck on getting a new can for your workplace.

You could check out the Equation RP-21 or RP-15MC. I just received my RP-15MC in the mail and it keeps the sound in very well. And they are both well within your budget. And after listening to them more, the bass is really nice. I'm impressed.
