I'm looking to make my first serious headphone purchase, but I'm not exactly sure of what to get.

I've done a bit of research, but I still can't decide.

So far my favorites seem to be the the Sennheiser HD497's (which seem decent, but the reviews haven't exactly been exceedingly glowing), and the Grado SR-60's (a bit more than I'd like to spend, and although they apparently sound great, are a tad ugly).

These are my favorites so far, but I'm definately open to more choices.

I'd like to spend only about around $50, and as high school student with little money I'd rather not be too flexible here.

I listen to almost exclusively rock; a mix of classic stuff and newer indieish bands.

welcome, sorry about your wallet
i'd get the EH350 or PX100, both sound excellent for both rock and classical.

when people make recommendations, they should include the headphone manufacturer as well...makes it easier for new guys to get the info they need quickly. it took me a while to get used to just seeing the model numbers.

The trouble I find at the $50 mark is very few cans in that range feel full of value. I like the Koss offerings at a much cheaper price or adding $20 to your budget and picking up some lucious AKG 81DJs. Personally I think that extra $20 is worth every penny and more.
Im not a fan of the Grado sound myself and if you find them ugly,we can rule them out.
There ARE good phones more $ than the Koss but less than that $50 but its so hard for me to recommend anything when $50 is knocking right on the $70 door (which opens up quite a few good headphone options)

Well I'd rather not go much higher, but I certainly wouldn't rule out anything just because it's just a bit more if there is a big difference in quality. I'd like to get the most for my money...

If the extra $20 is a real hassle then its not worth the trouble. granodemostasa's suggestions were both excellent. Im just dont find those cans a great value (for myself) Many others love them however. I suggest you buy from somewhere you can return if they arent your sound. If youre just starting out it really all is a shot in the dark until you figure out your own taste and ears.
