Man... I just bought one of these CD rom drives to play around with, and it arrived a few weeks ago. The CD caddy I ordered for it arrived today. I've just discovered that the headphone jack on this thing drives my HD600's with authority! It's strange. I'll do some more critical listening later.

Where did you find one of these? I have been looking around for a little bit and the only ones I have found were on ebay and they wanted like 15 dollars shipping. Can you give us an idea of the sound? If the headphone out is really that good, I might just have to pay that outrageous amount for shipping.

I take it you guys have also read that article on PF.

Looking on the NEC support site, it looks like the CD-602 is the only one with a digital out. Headphone out is rated 40mV/8ohm. Not too shabby.

I'm thinking of picking one up just for a back-up and to experiment with.

How does one of those sound through the onboard DAC?

My multispin has a digital output...

I've just been using the headphone jack so far though, and it's a lot better than most PCDP's. The sound is a bit fatiguing to my ears though, but that's most likely because i'm so used to vinyl. I got mine as-is for about 8$ shipped, and the caddy was another 5$. For 13$, I can't complain. I might actually buy a couple more and use them to DJ with.

Right-o, the 3XP, 4XE and 6XE have digital outs.

Will they play CDRs reliably?
I mean, these players are old (what years are they from???) and I remember some really old CD-ROMs would not read CDR/RW.

Yea I got one some time ago saw it on PF. Its worked out well for me.

chillysalsa;
I use the 6XE digital out into a P3-A to a maxed out META42, HD600's. Setup in this way it sounds very nice. I've used several CDR's with no problems.

dawtsf;
Its true the DAC inside is better than any portable I've heard. However I am not an expert with portable audio.

What do these things sell for? I've got this exact model, the external version, in like new condition, sitting around gathering dust.
