Hallo fellow head-fi'ers.
I'd hope you could help me out on this one. I'm getting an offer on a 3 year old NAD silverline s500 (not s500i) from a guy. The price is pretty much the same as a new C542. I'm unsertain which one to get. On the one hand the s500 (most likely) sound better and is better - it like 3x the price from new - but on the other hand it older and it dosen't support HDCD or any other 'new' format. They're both 24bit players, as far as I've understood.
The smartes move would of course be to audience them both, but I'm not sure I have the time (with finals and stuff,) and the s500 deal might be slipping out of my hands if I hessitate. I also believe the C542 might be a newer design, and I don't know if the old silverline can compare to it.
Could someone please give some feedback or thoughs? How is 'older' (as in 3 years) equitment (?), and should I just go for the s500 though it's limited to readbook?
Thanks for your input in advance,
Rasmus
