I was driving by a Goodwill today and decide to drop in. I got an NAD 3155 for $20. Just had a quick listen with my K601 and it sounds fantastic. The main reason I got it was for the phone preamp, but it's also my best headphone amp by far.

Wow nice score!! Thats really cheap. I hit my local goodwill store a couple times/month. They always have a couple sony, JVC or Kenwood CD decks... but never marked below ~$50-60.

The goodwill folks probably had no idea that NAD decks are generally higher end than most of the more common big names.

They had a Harmon-Kardon 33 for $30 and it was in bad shape. Most of the labels for the knobs was warn off, one knob was missing and the face plate was cracked. The only problems with the NAD are all cosmetic, one small scratch on one side, about 1/2 inch long and not deep, and marks on the top where another component sat on top. It probably got a little hot with the rubber feet of whatever was on top, but it's no worse than price tag residue.

The phono preamp on that piece is killer, too. Excellent find! Were any of the pots scratchy or anything?

I am using a NAD 7140 which I think has the same preamp of your 3155. Similar to you, I purchased it for the phono as I needed a phono section that could be driven by a low output MC cartridge (I was given a denon 790 turntable with a low output denon cartridge). Like you, I feel it has a great headphone section using my Grados 225 headphones. However, I felt my NAD did not drive borrowed sets of beyers 990 or akgs 701 too well. Later, using the 225s, I was able to compare the NAD to a Grado RA1 headphone amp and could not discern much, if any, difference in sound quality. ATM, I am pleased with the sound quality of the NAD with my 225s.

The NAD's have excellent headamps in them. I used my NAD 1700 headamp jack for years with my K340's before Head-Fi enlightened me, and it wasn't half bad. With headphones that are more efficient they can be quite nice. I'm really enjoying the headamp jack on my new Parasound Zamp with my RP-21's, it's quite good. It was a good bargain as well, but not quite as phenominal as your find. Congrats.

I use to own a NAD 7125 receiver when it was new on the market. I never used it's headphone jack for when I got me first headphones I acquired the STAX SR-34. had a hard time keeping me tethered to headphones in those days. never really enjoyed the STAX but preferred listening to me Polk Monitor 5's instead.

12 years later I sold everything and got half me money back out of it all. the guy who bought me NAD 7125 said it was much better than the NAD 710 that I had just bought. I dunno for I like me NAD 710 much more mostly do to it's features. the Polk Monitor 5's sounded better than any of the Polk 2 ways' I got after them.

me NAD 710 has no headphone output on it at all. so I have owned two NAD receivers and still have not heard the headphone output NAD's have.

a bud gave me his old pair of Grado SR-80's and for the first time I really enjoyed being tethered to me system. instead of buying a headphone amp and DAC I came very close to putting that money in the NAD c720Bee receiver. much more feature rich than any headphone amp. the headphone output would even have use of tone controls. I think the only thing that kept me from doing so is that I wanted a DAC, smaller footprint and something portable(battery powered). been trying to downsize me footprint in this world and headphones was the answer for me listening pleasure..

Someone recently told me that a couple of friends made hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, by systematically checking the pockets of sale jackets in the local Salvis.....
