i've owned my sony e888 for years now, and have used it a lot, but after getting the mx400 i put them away for a while. i recently dug them out of storage and went for a walk, using a sony r70 md player (no amp).
many people believe that after a while the e888's midrange blooms and overpowers the bass and treble. while i found the e888 mids warm and realistic, i could easily hear good, DEEP bass (flaming lips "suddenly, everything has changed" (from soft bulliten) with the subsonic notes on that lyric), and the treble was as lively as i remembered.
in any case, i have to say i'm not hearing this mids bloom that people claim happens to e888 over time.
