My wife dropped my zen on our parking lot pavement the other day and although she says it was an accident I have my suspicions. I think she was jealous of my little piece of audio heaven and wanted all of my time to herself. I tried using the self repair menu and reformating the hd but it just says "formating" and it never leaves that screen, reinstalling the os did nothing as well so I guess I'm stuck with having to get a new player. My current dilemma is that I have and extended service warranty with best buy and I really want to get my player replaced. Unfortunatley none of my local best buys any longer stock the original zen, they only carry the nx which in my opinion is a slighty inferior unit. I may wait for the karma to come out and try to haggle the sales/service tech into exchanging my zen for a karma. Does anyone on the forum have any experience with best buys extended warranty service? I would like to hear anyones input into the probability of them exchanging my zen for a karma.

I know hindsight is 20-20, but as ugly as it is, I always leave the Zen in the case. You can never be too sure these days, especially since I dropped and dented my digital camera last year.

do you think maybe, it's just the harddrive that's screwed?

2.5" notebook harddrives are relatively inexpensive, you could try swapping the drives out, and see if that brings it back from the grave.

Well then, make sure you get at least one new toy to ease your pain and suffering. Remember, your heart's been broken.

I concur with the brilliant dweebgal, in that you should just swap out the HD, and of course.....make wifey pay for it ! Hell, even go for a HD with a larger capacity. I would.

It's a good thing you didn't break an iPod. Half the reason they're so much more expensive is that 1.8" (?) drive. A common notebook drive should be easy enough to replace.

since you bought a warrentee, don't mess with trying to fix anything yourself.

I would wait till the Karma is out then try to get the price of the Zen applied against the price of a Karma. Your wife's mistake may turn out to be something of a good thing

I was just thinking the exact same thing.
