I was listening to James Brown live at the Apollo pt 2 (deluxe edition)in particular to "Its a Man's World". Towards the end of the song James starts belting it out and my speaker starts getting spitty and distorted. During "Cold Sweat" there is a point where the band is going full blast and James is going all out and there is a piercing sound like a toy laser gun. I am running 2 yr old PSB Alphas with an Arcam A65 plus (40w) and the volume knob was only at 9 o'clock. Help, do you think my speakers are blown? What could have caused them to blow?

Do you have another amp? If so, try the speakers with it. If you don't have another amp then it's a process of elimination.

Check all your interconnects are secure and try James Brown again. If the right hand tweeter is making a "laser gun" sound then connect the R/H channel to the L/H Channel at the amp.. if the Tweeter is now exhibiting the same effect from the R/H speaker then it's definitely a speaker problem and not an amp prob.

Sounds to me as if your tweeter coil is in the process of burning out..... Order a pair of new tweeters (treble units) and, in future, make sure your amp doesn't clip them into failure!

The strange thing is it was the worst with that cd. Today I played Elvis #1's and it sounded pretty good, except for a few spots. I did switch the speakers and they both sound that way. The right channel sounds worse but I think its because of the imaging. Im just gonna get new speakers for my birthday. Do you think anyone would be interested in these puppies as a salvage project?

Its actually a 24 bit remastered edition that sound great except for the parts where he screams and my speakers crap out. I think this has been creeping up on them with other recordings and this one just pushed it over the edge. Anyone ever have this happen to them?

Thanks for the replies guys! Turns out it was a combination of the two. I auditioned some Jm Labs Chorus 706 with the same James Brown
cd and I heard the same harsh szzzz on the parts where he screams. Id been eyeing them for a while and bought them to replace the Alphas. Unfortunately the Alphas will have to serve HT duty in the future, where the crappy tweeter wont be as noticeable until I get it repaired. I like the Jmlabs so far and think theyll sound better as the drivers break in. Right now the highs are sweet, sometimes harsh and the bass is lean.
