Yup. I'm an idiot. I went to the gym, put my E2cs in the pocket of my hoodie, got home and forgot to take them out. My wife did the laundry and that's where I found them this morning.

1. Is there any chance they'll dry out and return to the original sound, or are they trash?

2. If they are trash, what should I replace them with? The sound of the E2cs was nice, but they weren't the most comfortable fit for me. Not painful, just not comfortable. I tried all 3 tips. I'll be using them exclusively at the gym. Would like to spend no more than $100.

Thanks for your help.

Considering the "instruction" book (such as it was) for my E5's advised against even getting them wet with sweat (like at the gym), I would not hold out high hopes for your phones. Before I got the E5's I used the Sharp MD33's (about $35? i think) at the gym and they really sound VERY good and I got a good seal AND they are a lot easier to put in than Shures. I would recommend you get the Sharps--in case there are further mishaps you will only be out $35.

I have actually WASHED keyboards, and as long as they are allowed to dry completely before using again they always work fine.
Not that your cans are the same thing, but allow them to dry very thoroughly before attempting to use them. Who knows, you may get lucky.

Hopefully she used the gentle cycle

Slim chance, but who knows. Let them dry out all the way (could take a few days, be patient), then pop em in and try em.

I'd be more worried about the detergent effects on your headphones than the water.

Edit: Yes, definitely let them completely dry out first. I've seen a couple circuit boards get completely submerged in water and after drying out work fine. On the other hand, having gritty detergent all in your equipment is never a good thing.

So, should I not have been using my E2cs at the gym? Does anyone use their E2cs at the gym? What would be good phones for the gym?

I have washed several small electronic devices. Like a dozen other people have already said. Just let them completely dry out first.

Since you know they work, you really ought to put them away and let them dry off for a couple days. Maybe the left side will come back again. You could try putting them in the window sill tomorrow for a couple hours? If nothing else contact shure after the weekend and see what they suggest. I'd advise not using them again til you're absolutely sure the water is gone so you don't accidently damage them further.
