Hi!
My name is Jonathan, and I would like to illustrate my situation for you:

-first of all I find and old sansui amp and pre amp, apparently not fully functional.
I reflect about getting them repaird. - my first step into higher fidelity music.

-next, I find (with the amps) two not-working AR speakers.
Then, and get this, I decide to build my very own 3-way speaker system.
No, I am not menatally deficient.

-I research a lot about speakers-building (in this fourm too btw), and the project is about to move from theory&planning to actual building, if you care to know.

-Note that I have not yet repaird those sansui amps.

So the problem with my source is (and this is why, if you have started to wonder, I have posted this in the "source" fourm), the lack of one. you have heard correctly - after all that, no source, except, for my beloved ipod (3rd jen). which was, btw, my first real step into really listening to music.

So my question is: would it be fine to use my ipod as a source? considering the fact that in fact, all my music is ripped mp3, high sampling rate (320-256 kbs).

p.s
very sorry if the first part was much off-topic and annoyed you greatly, but I just had to say it all, get it off my chest, it kind'a cleared things up for me too.

thanks,
Jonathan

Sure, you can use your ipod as your source. The only thing is, the line out signal from the ipod might not be as strong as the line out from a home CD player deck. In this case, you may have to turn up the volume on the pre-amp higher than usual.

thanks.
But sound-quality-wize, wouldn't it be like pluging my junk-of-an-onboard sound card to the amp?
I mean is the pod considered to be a high-fid source?

Yea, that's what you are doing basically. ipod doesn't have a true line out, that might be another problem. But doesn't Apple sell a dock for the iPod, I remember there is a line out on the dock. People please correct if I am wrong.

there is indeed a dock, but I bought the 10 gig pod, which came without one.
What do you mean by a "lineout"?
So the signal quality that comes out of the pod is inferior to say a pioneer CD player or something of the sort?

The iPod is a more than capable source. Check out the Stereophile review. The iPod measures as well as a basic standalone CD player.

There is a true line out on the dock. You can buy a dock for a reasonable price if you bought an iPod that didn't come with one.

Lineout is set at a specific voltage whereas your earphone out is variable and doesn't usually go as high in terms of voltage.
