So... Where to begin?
I've never owned a pair of great headphones. Lately, I've been using some above-average etymotic earbuds, and they've always served me well. I thought I was to the point where I wouldn't be able to appreciate anything more than what I had in terms of sound quality. I thought those earbuds matched with a cMoy bass boost 2.0 in an altoids can were all I would ever need.
Well as of about 10 minutes ago, I know that I'm still just getting started.
First off, these HD595's are amazingly comfortable. I get a little bit of pressure in that space below my ear where my jaw attaches, but I have a feeling I'll get used to it. For my first real listen, I felt like something epic, so I put on the Halo 3 main theme, Finish the Fight. With my earbuds, I couldn't turn my amp up past about 2/3 without the music going to crap and static taking over my ears. With my 595's I swear I had every volume meter on my laptop and the amp completely maxed out, and it still sounded 99% clear.
Every instrument was as clear as I'd ever heard it through headphones. On the first listen, I noticed about 3 more levels within the recording I never even knew existed before. In addition, the 595's do a remarkable job of giving the recording depth, so much so that I began picturing the inside of my cranium like an orchestra pit.
I used the word epic before, and I feel like it's still the most accurate adjective for my first listen through Finish the Fight. I closed my eyes and felt immersed in the music, immersed in the fight itself.
I know all of this sounds super cheesy, but I really am enjoying these headphones that much right now. I can't even imagine what's going to happen once I get some lossless music (Currently downloading a 24bit-96kHz Vinyl rip of OK Computer) and a decent DAC (I feel like the headphone jack on my laptop along with it's on-board sound is the one thing holding everything back). I know these headphones don't really require an amp, so I think the amp I have right now along with the DAC should be everything I need.
Not too much of a purpose to this post, just wanted to share with you guys my first impressions of my first real pair of headphones.
Cheers
