i started off being a normal user of ipod buds and other cheap headphones because i didn't know any better. My start to the high end audio come by accident actually. i was tired of the outside noise from the bus ruining my daily listening and i wanted something more powerful to block out the noise. I began searching for headphones and was brought here. I read the Sr60I were amazing headphones and the best ones you could buy for the money. But for an extra few bucks and some more bass to go for the sr80I's. Well i located a grado dealer, which happens to be directly across the street from
me ( extremely temping on a daily basis). Went in tried out the sr60I and the sr80I and fell in love with the 80I's. Its now been about a year since i bought my sr80I and i still love them, but im looking for more. Yesterday i tried out the Sr225I and fell in love. Im waiting for them to get me a 1/4 to 1/8th adapor so i can fully experience them with my personal music on my Ipod, and when i do, i'll most likely be splurging for them. Today i also ordered the beyer 770 headpad and bought a Fiio E1 amp. But after reading a review of the headroom total airhead, i think i'll be splurging on that as well to amp my new 225I if i buy them. ( which i probably will). You can take my post as an amazing recommendation of the grado sr80I or as a thank you to everyone on the website whom ive learned much about the audiophile life style from and by the way my wallet hates you all.

since my intention is portable use, i plan on sticking with my 225I and not going any bigger, but you never know right.
and the 225I are actually lighter than the sr80I's so i dont know why people say they are less portable. they lighten up alot considering they have about 10 feet less cord lol.

dude, I know you won't like hearing this, but be careful with how loud you're listening to them. If you're trying to use grados in a noisy environment, you WILL blow your hearing out. Which kind of defeats the purpose of high end audio. I don't consider grados as a portable solution AT ALL. Unless by portable you just mean easily moving them from one very quiet environment to another.

May want to consider getting a nice closed set to compliment your open Grados, and appease your roomie.

Previously owning the SR225i and currently the RS1i, they are both quite easy to drive and great for portable use.

Nice purchase on the SR225i. I would avoid the SR325is as I found them way too hot in the treble region (shrilly) even with 100+ hours of burn in. The next jump worth the $$$ is definitely the RS1i.

i dont care about my roomate, hes the most anoying person in the world as well as being extremely noisy, hence why my volume levels are so high..and my grados work great as portable as traveling and walking with them. my next purchase will be a good amp and LOD

I'm just saying be careful man, it's really easy to be in a noisy environment with grados, and slowly inch that volume knob up a tiny bit. A LOT of head-fiers have tinnitus, and while its not a life changing issue, it is one that will, without a doubt, hamper your ability to enjoy those grados you so love. I know, I have some grados and I like them a lot.

It just seems counterintuitive to spend so much money on something that maybe provides a 1% difference (headphones) and then risk damaging something (your hearing) that makes a 99% difference.

I agree. I found my Grado SR60 good also for noisy environments. However, exercise ear-healthy awareness. We have only one pair of ears. And we can have as to many many headphones to buy anytime. Please use your Grado headphones for quiet places. Buy closed/in-ear phones for noisy areas.

P.S.
I am using my two open headphones, Grado SR60 & AKG K701 at my bedroom only-the quietest room in my entire life.

my ipod doesnt reall crank them that loud anyway. but i am guilty of listening at full volume alot. which isnt nearly as loud as going to concerts. thats where the sound gets pretty loud, but still not loud enough to bother me.

that's kind of dangerous man. If you ever are actually physically uncomfortable due to the loudness of sound, you are destroying your hearing. an iPod classic at full volume through Grados will absolutely destroy your hearing if you do it for very long on a consistent basis.

A while back I invested in some musician earplugs, as I was doing professional sound at the time (still do it on occasion) and thus was both subjecting myself to a lot of dangerously loud environments and my hearing was very monetarily valuable. Anybody who goes to rock concerts on a regular basis should highly consider them.

The occasional rock concert isn't a huge deal (though it can damage your hearing) but if you regularly go to concerts, it's worth buying a pair of very good earplugs that don't change the nature of the sound, but just lower the volume level.
