My friend is going away to the air force and hes letting me have his Sennheiser HD650's - I listen to music quite frequently, i have over 60 gigs of all different genres * half of it is electronic =P * . I'm an audiophile in that respect but hardware wise I'm quite shallow. I was hoping someone could suggest an AMP for around 300 dollars to compliment my new gear. It doesn't necessarily have to be portable - I'll be using it with my XFi soundcard on my desktop mostly - but i'd prefer that it isn't enormous.

Thanks guys...

Do a search for $300 amps with the search function, generally these threads end up becoming a list of every amp ever made for $300 +/- $200.

A few popular amps that are considered 'giant killers' for the HD650 in your price range are the LDII++, Musical Fidelity V3, HEED CanAmp, and various DIY amps like the PPA and M^3. There will be people telling you about portable amps but in general portable amps won't sound as good as home amps at the same price range.

And I'll throw in the Creek OBH-21 into the list as well. Goes very well with the cans, especially once the PSU has been upgraded to a regulated model.

Cheers!

Enjoy the HD650, which is a real bargain for $0.

If you ever decide to move on to a real source (CDP, tube DAC, etc.) - you won't find a better amp for the HD650's than the DV332. You'd have to spend >$1,000 to beat it with those phones - it totally transforms them to "World Class" phones... which they aren't without the right set up.

Gilmore Lite ($300) is supposed to sound nice with the 650s. You may be able to get an Musical Fidelity x-Can v3, they also sound nice with the 650s. Another (tube) option is the Eddie Current Lunchbox II ($225) - I have heard good things about it.
