I had posted under the title crazy idea, which got a lot of people to read it, and afterward, I realized that I need to not use clickbait titles.
I just got back from a trip overseas, and as a tentative step into investigating IEMs, I bought a pair of the 1MORE Triple Driver IEM based on the recommendation in the 2017 gift guide.
Straight up, they don't seat themselves deep enough into the ear just pushing them into my ear plugs. If I push them slightly deeper in, the bass gets a fair bit better. Regardless, the sound isolation is very good as is to be expected with custom fit tips.
I wouldn't suggest paying $150 for custom ear plugs just to use them as tips for a $100 set of IEM, but since I already have them, and always wear them when I fly, it was a nice chance to see how well they work.
My only complaint from using them this way is that if the 1MORE comes out of the earplug, I pretty much need to take out the earplug before reseating the IEM as the earplugs sit very deep and it's a little uncomfortable pushing them deeper trying to find the hole.
