I just tried to use my Emmeline SR-71 and it won't work at all. First I changed the batteries. No luck. Then I tried a different source, then different headphones and then a different interconnect. No luck at all.

I bought it from Todd the Vinyl Junkie and have sent him an email about how to get it fixed.

I just wanted to share my experience. Has anyone else had a problem?

Do you get the red light on the front bezel when you flick the on switch on the SR-71?

Were the batteries new (fully charged)?

Hi newguy....
Please make sure that both of the batteries are correctly inserted in the amp, the polarity of the battery is silk screened on the pc brd, as positive & negative. If you insert one of them wrong, the light will come on but no sound.
Also check another set of battery to make sure that one of those batteries is not defective.
good luck...

Every piece of gear will have failures no matter how well built. What matters is the service you receive in such cases when something goes wrong. Todd and Ray Samuels have a reputation of resolving any such problems quickly. I would say relax and wait until you hear from them. I would bet they send you a new unit asap.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for responding so quickly. I think it was the polarity. I put new batteries in making sure to check the polarity as you described and the amp works. I then put the old batteries back in and it worked for a couple of minutes and then no sound but the red light did stay on. Will the red light remain on even if the batteries lack sufficient power to produce sound? In any event, I put fresh batteries back in and the sound is back and wonderful. So this seems to be a case of operator malfunction for which I apologize. I'll now remember to check the polarity.

Yes the red light will remain on for a while at the end of the batteries life and you will get no sound. I bothered Ray with this one the first time it happend to me. Glad to hear all is well.

Hi David....
When the batteries are weak & getting old, the sound goes away & only the red LED is on for some time & then that goes away. The LED needs very little power to stay on.
Enjoy your music my friend...

My experience is that dead batteries never cause the SR-71 to shut down, they cause it to fail to power up after it is shut off . What you describe with the LED coming and and there being no power (when using dead batteries) is the same thing I experience. I have only had to replace 1 set of batteries per month since I had my SR-71 and I really don't keep track of battery life,so I just change them when I forget how long they've been in the amp. Perhaps Ray can put a small sticker on the bottom of the amp to prevent these problems in the future. Maybe one with a picture of the batteries showing proper polarity and installation. Just a suggestion.

Thank you, Ray. I'm listening to music on my iPod now with your amp and it sounds great. I've become very attached to the SR-71 in a short time.

I've been suggesting to Ray that he write manuals for all his gear and this is a good example as to why these really are needed. Manuals can only help.

As I indicated in my above post, that the polarity of the battery's contacts is SILK SCREENED on the pc brd & are very VISIBLE to the eye...also the same polarity is silk screened on the battery it self....

Ray,

I know it's there and you know it's there but it is obviously a problem for some of us. Even if only one person has a problem,it's still a problem. I just looked at my amp and I can see where some folks might not notice those little polarity symbols and worse yet, might not know what they mean. Even my wife did'nt realize right away the correct direction to install the batteries when they went dead while she was using it.
