I recently upgraded from MS-1's to MS-2's, which means that in addition to a lot of extra weight on my head, I also met the often-complained-about Grado bowl pads.

I washed them thoroughly with soapy water, and the pads softened up a little, but they were still nowhere near the warm embrace of my beloved "comfy" pads. Soon I realized that my discomfort wasn't a result of the pad stiffness, but because the earlobe was rubbing against the exposed driver. That's an easy fix!

I grabbed the cheap eyeglass-cleaning cloth that was packed with the tiny soap in the last hotel I stayed in and laid it out on the desk. The close itself is very thin-- about half as thick as a cheap t-shirt-- and very loosely woven. The bottom side is, however, extremely soft. I cut out two circles 1/4" larger than than the outer edge of a Grado driver cup. Lay the circles down centered on the driver and reinstall the bowl pads.

Easy as pie! I can finally wear my MS-2's without any discomfort, and the cloth is so thin that I can hear no discernible difference in sound. If it were to have any effect, I suspect this "mod" would soften the highs out just a tad.

Its worth a shot for those of you with itchy bowls.
