Ehh, I have never ever seen a HD580 in store, and tried the HD600 and liked it. What kept me from buying it was the fact that I currently have only a crappy soundcard, and shoddy receiver and no headphone amp.

Anyway, a camera has priority at the moment, so I'm just putting the money away for the time being.

I'm no camera expert, but I do remember trying numerous Samsung cameras, and none of them seemed to have very good image quality or ergonomics. I have, however, tried the Pentax DSLR that Samsung rebadges, and I actually quite liked it; plus it read a variety of memory card sizes and speeds just fine. Maybe you have a defective model?

From what I've read from you I have one question; What brand was the other card from you tried. We stopped selling Sansdisk cause it sucks. Not every card but it sucks. I don't think your camera fails. I've heard this story before. Sandisk uses a sloppy software for the cards.
But it could also be the explanation Davesrode is giving like the camera can't handle the speed? Would be strange for a dslr but still.

And go for the rebel instead of the d40!

Well it's too late now, but I would have made sure you would have used a reliable SD card....which you said was the Kingston 512kb card. Maybe the firmware would have given it better SD support...as well as SDHC.

Do you work at a photostore? The other card I tried was a Kingston 512MB SD card. I asked in the store if they were familiar with the issue, and sadly they weren't.

You could be right, I don't know. Thing is, I panicked a little because it was the last day I could return it, and I couldn't resolve the issue. I liked the camera, but all in all, I think I bought something too soon before doing some thorough research on what I actually want. Atleast now I can save up some more, and decide what I really want and need.

This is interesting to me, as I've been using Sandisk's Ultra II cards (in SD and CF formats) for a very long time now, and I've been nothing short of thrilled with their performance and reliability. Sorry to hijack here, but is this a recent delelopment? I'm about to purchase a 2GB Extreme III compact flash...

Yes I work in one and the two brands we threw out were Sandisk and Kingston....

I havn't had problems with Sandisk CompactFlash cards. I'm sure there are duds but to write off the whole brand is wild. If you view forums out there, I don't hear too many bad press about them. When you read comments in general, you usually only here bad stuff and not praise as much.

For me it is not really since I work there for over 3 years now and in I have seen many problems with these cards. All of the sudden they just went broke without any significant reason. I also know people who have used them for years and didn't have any probs with them but still, my fait is real low.

I am well aware of that. Didn't expected it till I saw many people coming with these cards to ask if we could recover their pics cause the card went broke. There are two manufactures in the world who produces cards. One is I believe Samsung and one is for sure Toshiba. There are many different brands who buy the cards. They use different software to run the cards and that makes the difference.

Well to start of I'm contrastique's BF. And yes we both work in a camera store. For memorycards we work with Toshiba an Lexar. Most card problems we've encounterd haven't been due to almost depleted batteries, thus turning the camera off and leaving the card corrupted.
1 check your firmware
2 check your card in a different camera
3 don't waste your ability to return your camera if you don't trust it, but be shure to write down the serial number, so you don't end up with the same camera you bought
4 return it wait a week and get the same, still not convinced bring it bag again.
5 never buy the d40 cause it will eat your money on lenses ( or the d40x for that case same problem) go either for the canon eos 400d/rebel something ( sorry don't know the american name) or for the nikon d80
6 remember the equipment don't make the shot, the person behind it does!

Thanks for your comments, and don't worry, I'm dutch too so I know which camera you are referring too. I've been eyeing the 350D, the 400D, the D40 (haven't done any research on lens prices yet) and the D70. They still apparently get models of the D70 in once in a while, and the body along costs 400 euro, which is a 100 less then the 350D body, and 150 cheaper than the D40 kit for instance.

Thanks for your recommendations, I'll take in all the advice I can get, and be sure to do alot of research before I actually buy a camera again.
