Hello,

Just got an Ipod and I'm curious how the stock phones compare to the MX500's I hear so much about. Honestly I'm pretty impressed with the stock ones compared to what normally comes with that kinda gear but for the extra $15-20 if they are a good improvement it would be worth it.

Welcome to Head-Fi, ToddM. Trust me on this one..........the Senn MX500s will result in the iPod buds gathering dust. To my ears, there is simply no comparison. The iPod buds are rather muffled sounding in comparison. Hope this helps.
BTW, if you want to save some (a lot of) money, pretend you never found this site and be happy with your iPod buds. This place is addicting.

Are you sure you just want the MX500's? wouldnt a few sets of $60 portable phones be better?

In other words, if you value your wallet, RUN. You'll end up with some Etymotic ER4P's ($260...) for that ipod...

You care about whether your headphones are good or bad... That's the one of the ingredients for becoming a headphone addict with an empty pocket. The other ingredient is this godforsaken place.

Heh,

Well Actually while this is my first post I've been lurking awhile in fact I have a couple sets of Koss 35's and a set of Optimus Pro 45's thanks to the reviews here and while I really like them they won't stay on in the gym or under a helmet mountain biking which is what I really got my Ipod for so I'm pretty well stuck with earbuds. I know there are certainly some really great earbuds in that $100+ range but I have more than enough will power to keep from spending that

for now.

I will definately give the MX500's a try.

Thanks

I have actually compared the two, and TRUST ME, go for the Mx400s/500s. Best cheap buds around (sound rivals the sony e888s!). The IPod buds are a bit more comfortable, though, that's my only problem with my Mx400s.. comfort :\. go for the senns, though.

Well to add a controversial opinion, I'm sure the mx500s must be better, but since they don't stay in my ears, I wouldn't know. By some miracle the ipod earbuds do stay in my ears, so of course they sound better.

They're a good bit better than what you get with an mp3 player in my experience, but of course you can still do better than the ipod buds if you want to.

I'm referrering to the 2nd gen of the ipod earbuds that come with a remote.

If the mx500s stay in your ears, why not get a pair and see which you like better?

Here's an idea. I've posted this comment before.

I got the 500's based on recommendations in this forum and was quite disappointed. They didn't fit me either and seemed not a bit better than the stock apple buds. And then I tired putting them straight in and what a difference. Seems weird and looks a little weird but give it a try. All of a sudden I had plenty of bass and more depth to the sound. By straight in I mean with the speakers facing forward and the wires pointing straight out of the ears.

Since then I've moved on to the Ety's though.

Right, I haven't worn them in public but the Ety's don't look much more stylish with the cables looped over the ears. If it came down to style or sound though, sound would win every time.
