I heard the KSC35 sound great with an amp but I've never seen anyone talk about them unamped. Is it because they sound kinda bad unamped compared to when they're amped?
are they still better than the PPs unamped?
how's the sound of the MX500 compared to those headphones? (PPs and KSC35)
I'm seriously considering getting the KSC35 or MX500 for portable use(I already have the PPs).
plz tell me what you think

LOL! Of course the KSC-35's are great unamped. The hype around using them with an amp is just because it's surprising for them to improve even more. Not only are they the best deal in the world for $30, but add an amp and you get even greater sound.

I have the Portapro's and use them at home while I use KSC-35's for portable use. The KSC-35's are less boomy in the bass and sound more balanced. I prefer the extra "oomph" in the bass for movies and such and like the over-the-head style more for home since they're easier to take on and off. KSC-35's are much easier to carry around though.

I might add though that the Portapro's are easier to drive for some reason. At any given volume the Portapro's are much louder than my KSC-35's are. So an amp would help there if you have a weak source. They still go plenty loud enough IMO.

I have MX300's and they're pretty assy.

Haven't heard the MX500's though being earbuds and significantly cheaper I can't imagine them beating KSC-35's.

Rizumu gave a comprehensive answer. If my opinion is worth anything, I'll just mention that I use my KSC-35 without any amp and it definitely doesn't sound bad at all. I don't have the PP or MX500 to compare with, but the KSC-35 is not as smooth to my ears as the E888 (gold or silver), but that's the only bad thing that I can say.

I have all three. For overall sound I would rank them as follows:

KSC-35
PortaPros
MX500

However, the MX500 aren't bad and might surprise you if you give them a listen. If I were to rank the headphones in terms of bang for your buck sound quality it would be as follows:

MX500
KSC-35
PortaPros

I also agree with Rizumu, although I'm not quite sure what he means by the MX300 being "assy". Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

that means the mx300 are pieces of ****

i feel that the mx500s should be at the bottom of that bang for the buck list... i am just unable to feel anything great about them. Maybe it's because i have etys and having anything near my ear canal, i'm expecting ety sound. I don't know.

just get the damned ksc-35s and quit your whining.

I had no problems with the sound of the KSC-35s unamped (they didn't sound terribly different with decent amplification...so don't worry about that too much.

i find ksc-35s sound to be a little dark (or if you like, muddy) sometimes. adding an amp helps to bright out 35s sound
