Just realized, that maybe I could just change the switch in the preamp to the 12.6v setting. Scared to try.
Don't do it, if you do you will be putting 12V instead of 6.3 on the heater plates. That would damage the tubesJust realized, that maybe I could just change the switch in the preamp to the 12.6v setting. Scared to try.
I got 6sn7 to 6922 adapters and I can use them for 6SN7 with 6V setting of the amp and can also run 12SN7 at 12V setting.Help!, my adapters doesn't work for some unknown reason. I plugged the 6sn7s in them, then plugged into the preamp sockets, I did it that way because the circuit board doesn't seem like it can take much stress.
Anyway, plugged up everything and powered up but only the rectifier lit up.
It was like the 6sn7s were not getting any power. So I disconnected everything again and put the 6922s back in to test to make sure nothing broke, like a tube pin solder joint.
The preamp is fine again with the 6922s, so it has to be a issue with the adapters.
Is there a difference between 6sn7 to 12au7 adapter, compared to a 6sn7 to 6922 adapter?
I didn't think so that's why I got the 6sn7 to 12au7, they are both 6sn7 to 9 pin.
Am I wrong? That's the only thing I can think of.
You know what, I remove that comment because I don't want you to electrocute yourself. Can you ask the guy you bought the adapters from whether that adapter is doing a voltage step down on the pins 7 and 8 of that adapter? You see the thing is 12Au7 can work with both 12.6V and 6.3V, but 6SN7 can only work with 6.3V. So there is a possibility that this guy did perform a voltage step-down from 12.6 to 6.3V accordingly with the 6SN7 voltage requirements.Just realized, that maybe I could just change the switch in the preamp to the 12.6v setting. Yeah think you're correct, I need 6sn7 to 6922. Can’t just go by 9 pin to 8 pin.I got 6sn7 to 6922 adapters and I can use them for 6SN7 with 6V setting of the amp and can also run 12SN7 at 12V setting.
That's also the adapter type specified in the amp specs. So I guess it'd be the best to get 6SN7 to 6922 adapter instead.
I'm anxious to hear your results as I'm planning to purchase this preamp soon and I'm just not sure wha tube configuration to go with yet.Ordered a set of 6sn7 to 6922 adapters from tubedepot yesterday. Tried to return the other ones to China, but it would cost more to mail than I paid for them. So I will just keep them, maybe I will try them in my kt88 monos that use 12au7 for the inputs.
Broke out my Eico 667 tube tester few days ago, after a few years, cleaned and calculated it, to test my 6sn7s, well they all test good, well into the green. So I decided to test the 6922s also, well, to my surprise all of my Sovteks tested bad, even the new ones, two of my four Teslas I bought years ago but never used test bad.
So now I am down to just two Teslas and my two new JJs that test good.
With these results I hope the 6sn7s sounds great, or I my have to go shopping for some 6922s.
Since we are both in Canada, let me know when you decide to buy one, I may sell mine (not decided yet). I currently have three preamps (A Classé model six, a model five, and the MP-701 MK3). I have no need for three, so I may get rid of one, but I am not sure which one yet since I love all three equally.I'm anxious to hear your results as I'm planning to purchase this preamp soon and I'm just not sure wha tube configuration to go with yet.

That definitely sounds like possible option. Here's a couple of pics what running so far.Since we are both in Canada, let me know when you decide to buy one, I may sell mine (not decided yet). In that same system I have tried a Topping A90D in preamp mode with the amp section disabled, although it sounded good, but the sound stage was flat and bass was lacking a little bit. Then I add the MK-701, sound stage opened up. With some tubes combined with some coupling caps, as previously described here, bowling alley-like sound stage, is as if I have surround speakers. Bass is solid, impactful, and highs are really sweet. The difference was so obvious. That definitely sounds like possible option. Here's a couple of pics what running so far.
I'm using my Topping d70 velvet as a volume control and I definitely can hear a difference when the volume control is bypassed.Highs sound frizzy with digital volume control.Anyways do you think adding a true preamp especially tube preamp would be beneficial?
The lrs+ have a pretty huge soundstage so improving that should be amazing. In that same system I have tried a Topping A90D in preamp mode with the amp section disabled, although it sounded good, but the sound stage was flat and bass was lacking a little bit. Definitely, adding a good analog dedicated preamp will change things for the better. The thing is with using the volume control of the D70, the volume control is done in the digital domain, as soon as the volume is over 40%, you will start losing bits.
My system is very similar to yours, Magnapan.7, Topping D70 Pro Saber, and now the MP 701.That definitely sounds like possible option. Here's a couple of pics what running so far.
