Young people see music as something even less consequential as entertainment: they see music as an accessory. They listen to music not because it makes them feel good (that's entertainment) but because it makes them look "cool" and "hip". Indeed some youngsters, even pre-teens, understand how absolutely awful the top-40 stuff are, but they listen nevertheless because "everybody is doing it"
