Munich High-End may be in majority a speaker focused event, but the headphone section has been growing rapidly and there are also many other headphone and related source gear manufacturers spread out over the venue this year! As well as a few exciting releases to be announced from Meze, Dan Clark, Yamaha, Astell&Kern and many more.

It's a place where we post videos, experiences, impressions.

Yes, the ‘World of Headphones‘ was quite a worthwhile finale. A bit too crowded (and therefore too loud) to really evaluate headphones or any other gear, but the presence of Jude, Zach Mehrbach, Axel Grell, and Dan Clark, among others, made up for it.

And yes, the major part of the exhibition halls was filled with speakers and such.

(Unfortunately these are all the pictures I took. And these were actually meant only to send to the folks at home.)

Some of those speakers are the most bizarre audio components imaginable.

High End Munich 2025 - Part 1

In no particular order, this is a just small collection of notes/thoughts I had on what little time I had with these different headphones.
I mainly focussed on headphones/IEMs I haven't heard before and revisited a few old friends through different sources.

Remember these impressions are under noisy exhibition conditions and not always with ideal source gear.

Aune AC45/55
I tried the AC55 - it is very likely the best on-ear foam-pad clip-on/Walkman type earphone I've ever heard.
At over 150 EUR it should be, but the market for such a product outside of Asia is likely going to be very limited.

I'm no stranger to ear-clip headphones, and these clips were quite difficult to use properly.
_DSC4876.jpg
Aune AR9000 (PROTOTYPE)

One of the highlights of the entire show.
It's ALMOST there, they just need to iron out a few very tiny things, but it's already extremely impressive.
_DSC4877.jpg
Fostex TH1000RP
Quite thin sounding, soundstage is a bit claustrophobic like most Fostex.
_DSC4878.jpg
Fostex TH1100RP
More full-bodied than the 1000.
I think this will make quite a few people happy after a pad swap to bring out more bass and soundstage.
_DSC4879.jpg
Softears Twilight
I loved these single dynamic driver IEMs.
Full bodied, bassy and highly detailed.
Ergonomics were surprisingly above average.
_DSC4880.jpg
Letshouer DX1
Just a good all-rounder
_DSC4881.jpg
Letshouer S08
Another good all-rounder
_DSC4882.jpg
Letshouer Mystic 8
Anything acoustic, orchestral or live just sounds great
IMG-20250519-WA0013.jpg
Snowsky Wind (FiiO)
Quite easily the single worst headphone in the entire show
_DSC4883.jpg
FiiO FT7
Can't fault it.
Just a middle-of-the-road pleasant planar.
_DSC4884.jpg
FiiO FT7
The hype is somewhat lost on me.
It's good, but it's not the best thing since sliced bread.
However, sub-bass texture and extension is fabulous.
_DSC4885.jpg
Yamaha HA-L7A
This headphone amp actually has some funky DSP modes that are a bit gimmicky for me, but that actually do work well for what they're supposed to sound like.
Much better looking in person and fun to use.
Did a fine job of powering the Yammie planars.
_DSC4886.jpg
Yamaha YH-C3000 (PROTOTYPE)
A show highlight for me.
Not neutral!!
Fun!! punchy, bassy, clean, tight and drop-dead gorgeous
IMG-20250519-WA0034.jpg
Yamaha YH-5000SE (left)
Sounds REALLY good paired with the Yamaha amplifier - a huge improvement over the first time I heard these with different amping.
I still don't like the midrange/upper-midrange tuning - there's something glaring that reminds me of pinna-gain in IEMs, so I can definitely see some people liking these.
Soundstage is AWESOME.
_DSC4890.jpg
Yamaha YH-4000 (PROTOTYPE) (right)
This might be my personal highlight of the entire weekend.
It's not neutral.
Bassier than the 5000, more intimate.
It just got my toe-tapping.

The tuning of this, with the soundstage of the 5000 would be my ideal Yamaha.
_DSC4891.jpg
Moondrop Horizon
Very 'calm' sound, like the planar siblings.
_DSC4892.jpg
Mamoritai Euphony (amplifier)
Fosi Audio i5 (headphone)

This was a very fun and engaging combination
_DSC4895.jpg
TRN Azure Dragon
14.6mm planar.
Lean and detailed sound.
Could be a touch bassier for my taste, but very competent neutral'ish sound.
_DSC4896.jpg
TRN Shell
Thin and trebly. Not for me
_DSC4897.jpg
Auribus Sierra
This one's not for me.
Somehow a bit too diffused sounding.
_DSC4901.jpg
Meze 105 Silva
mmmmmmmmmm... lush and punchy, like an HD650 dipped in chocolate
_DSC4902.jpg
Meze Poet
Truly high end INTIMATE sound.
I prefer the bigger presentation/staging of the Empyrean II
_DSC4903.jpg
Campfire Audio Alien Brain
Good all-rounder
_DSC4904.jpg
Campfire Axion
This one didn't 'move' me, so I moved on quite quickly.
_DSC4905.jpg
"Zeitgeist Germany" IEMs
The ergonomics are SPECTACULAR.
With a sound to match. Very bassy, and tight. Just really good fun.

"Zeitgeist Germany" IEMs
The ergonomics are SPECTACULAR.
With a sound to match. Very bassy, and tight. Just really good fun.
Nice summery with headphones I didn't realized.
Thank you.

As I am an open back guy, the conditions on this exhibition were in no favor for me, except the Warwick and Meze booth.
My highlight of the day, apart from meeting Zach, was the Warwick Aperio system.
What a pleasure hearing an electrostat sounding that good, with a somewhat warm and lifelike tone. It still amazes me, when I think of.

The most interesting headphone as "I want to listen at home on my equipment" was the AA Composer. It catched me immediately.
Can't tell for sure why, but it did. Even on my Xperia 1VI and these conditions. ^^

And . . . .
the Verite Open on this fabulous Feliks Envy.
What a listen with my own tracks. :gs1000smile:
(Thanks to Zach and Bevin, who searched for a 3.5 to rca cable in their stock that long. ^^)

It was a great day hanging around with @KlaraKlang and friends.

.... Part 2

Swecci Audio Kukulkan
Hand-painted, high-end IEM
All in all, it sounds good. Didn't spend long enough with it to say more.
_DSC4908.jpg
Swecci Audio Scale
Very yummy bass.
_DSC4910.jpg
Audeze CRBN2
Somehow I liked it, but not all of it, since it wasn't what I expected.
There wasn't any of the treble air and spaciousness I expect from an electrostatic.
But it makes up for it with phenomenally detailed and deep bass.
_DSC4912.jpg
Palma Audio DSH-1
Sounded exactly the same in open or closed form.
When 'closed', it didn't isolate as much as when I put my hands over the backs of the cups, so it's not as functional as it could be.
_DSC4915.jpg
Lotoo
Everything was just so impressive.
I tried my own IEMs with these devices and the way they scaled up... just jaw-dropping
_DSC4917.jpg
DCA Corina
Very 'polite' and calm kind of presentation.
Reminded me a little of the Moondrop planars.
_DSC4919.jpg_DSC4920.jpg
Hifiman Shanri-la Mini
Better tuning than the Big Shangri-La.
Overall a kind of thin sound, but big scale from the large drivers.
Very shocking to see exactly the same headband on this as the Deva Pro
_DSC4921.jpg
Hifiman Isvarna
Probably the most fun headphone Hifiman has released in about 9 years.
The asking price is .... something else.
_DSC4922.jpg
Mirph Designs Vitrum (PROTOTYPE)
Wonderful design from the maker of the Mirph-1
Uses a new type of glass-dome driver developed by GAIT

Clearly some more work to be done with the bass extension and staging, but for a VERY early prototype, there's a lot of potential here.
_DSC4926.jpg
AT | B Pristine Audio
AB 92 - AirBorne - (PROTOTYPE PLANAR HEADPHONE)

Powered by 'ClearWater' DAC/AMP/Preamp

This headphone, despite having PLACEHOLDER grills and headband was for me, one of the absolute highlights of the entire show.
Truly high-end planar sound.
What it lacks in soundstage it makes up for in every other aspect.

I can't wait to see the finished product!
_DSC4927.jpg
1747756821916.png
Noble FoKus Rex5
Natural-disaster levels of bass and mid-bass.
I had to make a HUGE scoop in EQ, and they were still bassy!

ANC worked quite well in the noisy hall.
_DSC4929.jpg
Moondrop Psyche
These did not psyche me up ... (I'm sorry :P )
_DSC4931.jpg
T+A Solitaire P
Every time I hear these, I think - yup, these might just be the most technically superior planar on the planet right now.
_DSC4933.jpg
Grado
At least they look nice
_DSC4934.jpg
ESD Acoustic - Kirin
Overall feels like an attempt was made as emulating the Focal Utopia, but with no cup rotation and somewhat flabby bass, I wasn't convinced.
_DSC4936.jpg
Nice_DSC4937.jpg
A bit thin_DSC4938.jpg
VERY nice. I could almost live with this one._DSC4939.jpg
Nah... there's a tiny bit of midrange jankiness_DSC4940.jpg
This Koss was OK but the pads were incredibly stiff.
It's not really part of the show, it was hooked up to a huge reel-to-reel
_DSC4941.jpg
Perun (Russian Electrostatic)
These are warmer sounding than the other Perrun with the suspension strap.
Both of them were a highlight of the show for me.
VERY tall soundstage, great tuning and lovely open airy treble
_DSC4943.jpg
Moondrop Pavane
Such an incredibly dull, closed-in, boxy sound.
There are free Nokia flathead earbuds I have that are better.
I would take a Vido, Kube or Sabia V6 over this any day.

@GREQ For the Mirph Designs Vitrum, was wondering if you had a moment to pick the brain of the designer for these, what kind of sound signature are they going for with this headphone?
Oh for sure, more than a moment; we already met last year in Canjam London, which is when I borrowed the Mirph-1 for my review, so he wanted to pick my brains too for impressions.

Basically, it's a super early newborn prototype, so there hasn't been enough time to even go through more than half a dozen iterations, so he's just not getting the bass or the soundstage to the right level yet, which is completely normal at this early stage, and something most people agreed upon.

I'm pretty sure the goal is something more technical than the Mirph-1, but not neutral, still musical/fun, the man loves his bass, but he really wants to put community opinions first this time.

I think the Mirph-1 was more like his own personal love-letter to headphones, and now it's time to get more serious.

Sorry, but we actually spent so long nerding-out about every possible design modification and tuning tricks etc, I didn't really ask him about his goals 😅

May 20, 2025 at 3:58 PM Post #12 of 28
That's awesome to know, I thoroughly enjoy my Mirph-1 and it's probably my favorite headphone that I own which is why I asked about this upcoming one, not the most performant but the whole package just sits right with me. I'd be down for a more technical and refined version of the Mirph-1 if that's the goal.

No need to apologize, I'm really quite curious what design modifications and what not he's considering doing down the line if you have a moment to discuss that?

It's too early to say where the project will go, since it's just an early prototype and was only there to generate feedback.
I think it could completely change down the road so there's really no point speculating ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Final Part 3...

Sennheiser HD505
Under exhibition conditions it just sounds like another classic open-back Sennheiser. (which is a good thing really)
Nothing to complain about here.
IMG-20250519-WA0015.jpg
SoftEars (no individual photos)

Enigma -
wow, these are REALLY fun
Studio 4 - a bit trebly for me
Stuidio 2 - huh, surprisingly smooth and dark/neutral
Volume - wasn't for me
Volume S - I can totally see why everyone loves these, but they have a touch too much pinna gain for me
IMG-20250519-WA0018.jpg
Moondrop Pill Ows
Surprisingly good fun - I think these would be awesome for office use - they ACTUALLY have bass!
VID-20250519-WA0002-ezgif.com-speed.gif
Feliks Audio Bliss
These were running a pair of STAX SR-X9000.
Overall this was a smoother experience than I remember these headphones sounding through the flagship STAX amp.
A stunning work of art and a chill vibe.
IMG-20250519-WA0007.jpg
Nur Headphone
A welcome surprise.
These Italian planars had a very 'euphoric' musical kind of sound.
Not weirdly tuned, just very emotive, and had great delicacy handling acoustic music.
I don't know which filter they had inside, but I would like to hear these again.
IMG-20250519-WA0012.jpg
Sivga - Unnamed Prototype
These use the new GAIT glass dome driver.
Sub-bass is missing :/ - quite a lean sound.
Other than that, they have a lot of potential.
Overall good sound.
IMG-20250519-WA0019.jpg
Noble Audio - Shogun
Wow.
The whole package is just stunning.
Design, finish, cable, sound... truly a high end IEM.
IMG-20250519-WA0023.jpg
Aune IR3000
Also using new glass-dome drivers - didn't get confirmation if they're a GAIT collab
A pleasant all-rounder
I think these will be something of a crowd pleaser if they're under 200 EUR unless there's further development/improvement planned.
IMG-20250519-WA0029.jpg

TANCHJIM Fission (newly announced)
These are kind of neat, with many tuning options with 4-switch positions and tuning nozzles.
Every switch setting sounded too thin, except for the bassiest 'pop' setting, not sure what nozzle I had on.
Overall neutrali'ish and a relatively good performer. Curious what the price will be.
IMG-20250519-WA0033.jpg

The following is more stuff I heard but either didn't take photos of, or the photo was trash, or it was something I've revisited.

Obravo Clio/ Ra-c/HAMT-1 MKII etc - everything was a variation of the same flavour of AMT - which was somehow airy, but also compressed.
It's an unusual presentation that I just can't get used to. I heard them last year and still they don't do it for me.

Moondrop Meteor - These didn't speak to me. Technically good, but the tuning wasn't my taste.
Moondrop Dark Saber - The tuning is great, but I think they're losing their competitive edge now.

Warwick Acoustics
Aperio vs. Aperio GOldenSound

I thought the GoldenSound version had more 'dynamics' and a slightly more fun signature.
I found the GoldenSound Aperio easily preferable over the original which I found a little 'boring'.

Aune AR7000
So apparently the 7000 they had at Munich LAST YEAR was a prototype!
The new version sounds like it has almost planar-like linearity in the bass and generally overall.
If you love HD650/660S, this is the closed-back headphone for you.
Great sound.

Astell & Kern - Ultrasone headphone
It was fine.

Austrian Audio + new pads and new spacer rings
Differences are VEEEEEEERY subtle, but that's exactly how it should be - keep the same flavour overall but reach the widest set of preferences.

Audeze LCD-5
I heard these at CanJam London last year, and they're kinda boring the 2nd time around XD... sorry Audeze....

iFi Go Pod Air
VERY good product. I'm hoping to get a review sample of these in the near future.

Grell OAE1
3rd time I've heard these.
This time I noticed the biggest problem with them, that the sound DRASTICALLY changes depending on how forward or backward on your head you wear them.
I like to wear all headphones as far forward as possible so the back of my ears touches the 'back' of the pad - this makes the OAE1 sound very dark and diffused.
Pushing them back so the driver is closer to my ears makes these sound more neutral, treble regains it's presence, detail and 'energy'.
I still like these, but they're too wild.

Sendy Audio
Peacock
- always sound great!
Aiva 2 - lush sound... kinda like a more lush, planar HD650??? maybe??
SV023 - not sure... they didn't wow me, but i think for laid back chill vibes they're quite good
Que - (IEM) I liked it, but I didn't love it completely. Good all-rounders, but I also didn't spend long with it.

Meze - Alba (IEM)
Sounded MUCH better to me this year than last year when I heard them at CanJam London
Another good all-rounder

(If I remember anything else, I'll edit and add it to this post)
