Hi, one of my first posts but I have been thumbing through the pages of headfi for a while now.

And I would like to now officially blame all of you from my initial interest in a pair of 60 quid Grados to now wanting about £1000 worth of amp and various sets of headphones…. Hahaha I’ve been ‘headfied’

I currently own 2 sets of headphones, the Sony MDR-CD1700 and the MDR-F1.

The F1s are light, comfortable and cool (very very open so my ears do not get hot). They seem to have a none fatiguing sound too. I can wear and listen to them through various sources (pc, home speaker amp for TV/games/music) four hours on end without tiring. The cd1700s offer more detail and more bass but as they are closed they can get warm.
Both are great but I now fancy a change.

Well, after reading a whole bunch of reviews and opinions I have drawn up a short list of stuff I’m interested in and I really need some help in pairing phones to amps and selecting a nice range for all my needs.

Grado SR-80s
Started at these. Relatively cheap for a highly regarded set of cans. Nice to have the option to listen to music with the ‘Grado sound’. Plus these will be the most portable out of all my existing and future headphones.

Audio-Technica ATH-A900
As far as I understand these are a good all rounder. Are they better than the CD1700? I’m interested in these for playing games and watching movies/TV.

Beyerdynamic DT880
Great reviews and very respected. Cost about 170 over here… but some believe the 701s are better?

AKG K701?
Highly regarded again. But similar to the 880s so it’s these or the 880s to sit at the top of my headphone tree. Swinging towards the 701s at the moment, but still very undecided, hence this thread requesting a little help

Now I’m also in the market for an amp to make the most out of my existing and new headphone purchases. It will be my first dedicated headphone amp so I need some help as I have no experience in this area. Basically I need a good amp that will pair with a variety of headphones and make the most out of a variety of different sources…

The list I have so far:

Gilmore Lite Headphone Amp
GS-1 Headphone Amp/Pre-Amp
HeadRoom Desktop Amp with DAC

They range from cheapish (the Gilmore lite) to the expensive (Headroom amp)

Now the desktop has an advantage as it can have a DAC built in.
Another interesting point is it’s in an offer bundled with the 701s over at headroom…

But anyway, any ideas which sound best or compliment my list of head phones?

(I’ve just bought a PA2V2 which should help matters for when I want a light portable upgrade in sound through my pc or iriver ihp120. Probably will help even when listening though my Denon 2301 surround receiver.)

Sorry for the huuuuge post but any help or suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry for the bump but the exchange rate has just hit 1.9 dollars to the pound

So I'm looking to take advantage of that fact haha...

The HeadRoom offer of $1000 for K701s and the Desktop amp with DAC is even more tempting, but im still after an opinion on that amp. I haven't found much in the way of reviews (found the max module reviews etc) but nothing of that amp and the 701s togther.

Help!

Dont forget to consider the Aria amp/dac and K701 combo.
