Bought MSI SLI Plus z370. Specs show it should be better but my old motherboards audio unfortunately is a lot better:
GA-MA790XT-UD4P with Realtek ALC889A codec.
My setup are two passive speakers for $350 and an amplifier for $400. Quite capable setup.
What I had with my old motherboard was an excellent soundstage and clarity in the highs. That has been lost to me on the MSI SLI Plus z370.
That's sad and weird. Seems like with any sound gear you gotta listen before you buy. But that almost practically impossible with motherboards.
Moral of the story? Get a higher grade USB DAC that you can connect to any computer. Avoiding motherboard audio uncertainty that way. Sad lesson to learn for me
