MrSpeakers ETHER C Review / Announcement - A New Closed-Back Planar Magnetic Flagship from MrSpeakers

OK, so finally go to sit down to this tonight using the Mojo for quick headphone swaps with its dual single-ended outputs. Hadn't got much further than volume matching when the twins woke up, so unfortunately will need to postpone thoughts on SQ till tomorrow night.

Regards isolation - after volume matching both to 85dB I measured each ~20cm from the R cup on my head and they were effectively the same. The T5p might have had a 1-2 dB advantage, but not worth quibbling over. On a less rigorous test, with someone else wearing them in turn at matched volumes they seemed subjectively to be equivalent.

Comfort wise similar, with my glasses on the flat pads of the T5p are more comfortable as the angled Ether C pads create a little pressure area, without glasses I think the Ether C is a hair more comfortable. That's saying something really, when you consider that I rate the T5p as a very comfortable headphone amongst those I've owned or tried for any length of time and that we are talking a Planar Magnetic headphone in the Ether C.

Will hopefully get to do actual testing of SQ tomorrow night, I think I will use my desktop rig which also has dual single-ended outputs.

Thank you, that's really good to know about the isolation.  I don't wear glasses so would love it if they're even more comfortable than the T5p.

Anyone try the ether-c with alternative pads? Maybe the alpha pads or beyerdynamic DT770 or T70 or T5 pads?

I can't imagine what pads would be better... MrSpeakers has always made and sold the best headphone pads in the world, bar none.

Well, I was able to get the J$ leather pads to fit pretty easily. They sound pretty much the same to me, but are just a tad more comfortable. Of course, YMMV.

I wasn't able to get the DT770 pads on (I wanted to try the velour, as I like that feel) since the little lip was too small to fit on the Ethers. Also, there is no nylon mesh to project the white driver covers, so hair might get in there. Probably not a good idea to use the J$, but one can, if one wants to :)

I tried to audition the Ether C in London this week but Unilet doesn't have them in stock yet.

The ETHER C's have been a great boon to me, these last few days. When not dealing with red tape and stuff, I plug in the ETHER C and get lost in the music. The isolating factor of the ETHER C's allowed me get lost in the music, and the music has been such a comfort. Kate Bush sounds so sublime, she is celtic Skylarke. The ETHER C is great for during the day, but at night I use my open back headphones.

Which one?

Hmm that is a hard question to answer lol. Both of my open back cans sound great. Lately I have been using the HE1K, with my custom Norne Audio cable, and have been awed by the sound. However the ETHER is not a slouch either.

We will be showing something fun for ETHER C at the NY meet.  It's compatible with all existing units and free to current owners.
