The slappa is a little bit of a squeeze. Otoh a little more portable. choose your trade-off.

Alpha Primes and Dogs sounded great out of the O2 we played with at the recent UK Headfi meet.

Awsome, I initially got that setup because coming from my pc I got a buzzing sound and the o2 was supposed to have a pretty black backround. With the AD or AP do you know if the gain was on high or low? I've noticed that the o2 makes a hissing sound when put on high gain.

Calling @takeanidea to the thread. He should be able to answer that question :-)

Hi guys,

High gain is really powerful you shouldn't really need it in a quiet room. Sure there'll be a bit of hiss on high gain but I didn't find it too distracting to the music.
On low gain I don't hear any hiss. The O2 does them a good justice. Of course, (and I know some won't want to hear this), once you start pairing your O2 with something special amp wise then your Mr Speakers will truly shine.
The Dogs and Primes are extremely revealing in that mid section that will have hiss, that will reveal a slight harshness to old tracks and MP3s. That must not be confused for poor performance in the O2, it's another piece of evidence to show just how accurate they are.
The O2 I have needs no power source when connected to an external amp, I wonder if anyone else has noticed that? That'll remove some surface noise if you have younger hearing than me

The hissing sound will be the noise floor. using a lower gain setting should remedy that problem as high gain has a higher noise floor.

Thank you for the information. And on all of my headphones I always use low gain and never hear hissing from the o2. I was just wondering of the Primes would use high or low gain, and it seems like low will push them just fine. And @ takeanidea, you said the alphas shine if o2 is paired with something special amp wise did you mean the odac? I guess I need some clarification on that statement.

I was lucky enough to win the not so silent auction of the Alpha Dog Prime Dan so gratiously offered to help pay for the room. Couldn't be happier! These things really growel!

Incredible resolution, transient response, and fast decay to prevent tone-schmear (you heard that phrase here 1st) while staying lively and musical.

Using a McIntosh MHA100 to drive them.

Sorry I mean the Odac. I have an O2Dac but it's the same design. I get lots of mains noise through my setup which is an O2Dac with no mains going through  Fidelity Audio HPA-200 SE 1mw Headphone Amp. Once the music is on it bothers me not.
Through the headphone out of the Odac on either high or low gain- there is no hissing on my Alpha Dogs. Enjoy your Odac Frosty it's a great piece of kit

Currently I have the odac/o2 amp. For the meantime should that be enough to get the majority of what these cans have to offer?

Frosty , it'll do for now , but they can do better, much better. I am happy with the Dac part , but the more you add in sound quality the better the results

2 questions about the prime, one being how deep is the bass extension and two any thoughts on how the liquid carbon may pair with them?

I find the bass extension excellent. The Liquid Carbon is an outstanding pairing. I had the pleasure yesterday. Really very good. I have the primes and ordered the carbon. Needless to say, I was delighted!
