Mr Whiskers is on the case of the mysterious RS-1 versions
Can you help him in his investigation????
So far he has the following info:
There appear to be three types of grados, super-vintage, Vintage and New-skool.
Super Vintage with brown headband, gold lettering and black driver mesh seen here:
Vintage:
With black headband, white mesh but still using the Garamond style lettering.
seen here:
New Skool:
It seems simple but what about the boxes???
Super-Vintage A+B box's
Seen here:
Vintage Card box
seen here:
and new-skool box:
chriscu1 describes in 2001 why the newskool box was brought out.
new Grado RS1 box because of Sept. 11
"It's really just a plain white cardboard box (the kind that you would buy at a office supply store to ship something in) with a big white sticker
on the front that says "Grado Reference Series RS1".
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT??
Because in "A tale of two rs-1" by mulveling he noted:
"I'd given up on the RS1 I bought new around fall 2005 - there was a harshness/glare in the upper mids/lower treble that rubbed me the wrong way, even after burnin and with any pads. I wasn't terribly impressed by the build either"
"The sound signature is largely the same, but the vintage pair is missing the harshness/glare that vexed me with the new pair. This old pair is definitely smoother sounding. Possibly also a bit more airy, and with slightly more natural bass response. "
Also it would be nice to know exactly how old each version is.
If we know supervintage started in 1995
and that mulveling's super-vintage is 1997, and zanth super-vintage is 1999
Questions are:
1)How old is vintage??
2) Could super-vintage have come without a woodenbox, and brown headband?
3)When did they start making new-skool??
4) When did the serial #'s start???
....the list goes on....
But wiat..It gets more convoluted...
goredwings19 once said there is a forth rare kind??
"AFAIK There are at least 3 types of Rs-1's in circulation, maybe more. There is the one that was on ebay, the dark mahogany coloured ones and the light coloured ones (current production). I have the dark mahogany coloured ones. Now there is no difference in SQ between the dark and the light coloured versions. Or at least I can't hear the difference.
So what makes the ones that sold on ebay getting crazy bids???? I have talked to Zanth (he owns a pair like those sold on ebay) and NeilPeart (his friend has a pair). The ones that sold on ebay have the hp-1000 derived drivers. This will of been Joe Grado's last bit of involvment in the production of headphones. So what does this mean as in regards to SQ? Some people find the Rs-1's highs a bit much. These ones because of the hp-1000 drivers have rolled off highs. And that's why you have Larry from headphile and NeilPeart gunning for them. They did their research."
DO YOU HAVE INFO FOR MR WHISKERS??
